Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats won the opening game of the Northern League Finals 6-4 Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field. RailCats RHP Kyle Heyne pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief and fanned two for his first post-season win of the season.
The RailCats got on the board in the second inning. RF Cristian Guerrero drew a walk, 1B Jeff Beachum singled him to third and C Brett Wallace lifted an opposite-field sac fly to open the scoring.
The RedHawks rallied for a pair of runs in the second inning. 2B Carlo Cota worked a leadoff walk and LF Justin Justice singled off the lip of the infield grass to push him to third. With the tying-run 90-feet away, RailCats starter RHP Garret Holleran threw a 55-footer, which allowed Cota to score from third and tie the game at one.
In the third, SS Zach Penprase was plunked by Holleran and 3B Jeremiah Piepkorn pulled a ball past RailCats 3B Chris Carrara to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. 1B Ruben Salazar doubled to left and C Alan Rick singled him to third. With men at first and third, Cota lifted a sac fly to right to pad the RedHawks lead 3-1.
RedHawks CF Donzell McDonald drew a leadoff walk, nabbed second and reached third on a balk by Holleran. RF Mike Coles clutch-hit McDonald home to give the RedHawks a three-run cushion. But in the fifth, the RailCats rallied to cut the lead in half.
Wallace cracked an RBI double and Carrara reached on a throwing error by Piepkorn. The RailCats played small ball to push across the tying-run. CF Rob Marconi drag bunted Carrara to second and LF Mike Massaro lifted the sac fly.
Beachum led off the seventh with a double to the left-center gap. Carrara singled Beachum home and reached second on a throwing error by Coles. In the eighth, the RailCats added an insurance run. DH Steve Haake struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch. Haake stole second, reached third on a throwing error by C Alan Rick and scored on a sac fly by Beachum.
The RedHawks and RailCats are scheduled to play game-two Wednesday evening 30-minutes following the finish of game-one. RHP Yosandy Ibanez will toe the rubber for the RedHawks.
