Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - The RailCats have added catcher Jordan Comadena and right-handed pitcher Mike Perconte to their roster, both players with local connections.

Comadena is from Normal, Ill., and played collegiately at Purdue University. This is the second time he has signed a contract with the RailCats, but he has never donned a RailCats uniform. Two weeks after signing with the team in Januray 2009, the Houston Astros signed him as an undrafted free agent.

The right-handed hitter spent three seasons playing for the Astros Class-A and Advanced-A affiliates, combining to hit .221. In 2011, Comadena batted .295/.389/.432 with a homer and 16 RBI in 115 plate appearances for Advanced-A Lancaster in the California League.

Comadena, 26, batted .270 in his four-year Boilermaker career and helped Purdue reach the Big Ten Championship Game as a senior, when he hit .276 with 25 RBI. He also played three seasons with the Madison Mallards of the collegiate Northwoods League, where he was a teammate of RailCats first baseman Mike Rohde. Comadena was a Northwoods League All-Star in 2006 and was the Mallards' co-MVP the following summer.

Perconte hails from Naperville, Ill., and pitched for Naperville North High School. He was signed by his hometown Chicago Cubs as an undrafted free agent in 2008 and played for three seasons in their organization, reaching the Advanced-A level. He had a career year in 2010, going 5-2 with seven saves and a 3.71 ERA with 97 strikeouts in 87 innings for Advanced-A Daytona.

Perconte split the 2011 season between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers Double-A affiliates, combining for a 3-0 record and a 7.71 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings. He pitched collegiately for four seasons at Murray State. Perconte's father, Jack, was a Major League second baseman for parts of seven seasons with the Dodgers, Indians, Mariners and White Sox.

With spring training less than a month away, Gary has signed 21 players for the 2012 season. A maximum of 28 players may be under contract during the pre-season and the active roster may hold up to 22 players once the regular season begins.

The RailCats Home Opener is 50 days away on Friday, May 25 at 7:10 p.m. against the Wichita Wingnuts at U. S. Steel Yard.
