Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - It is no secret that RailCats manager Greg Tagert, a California native, brings many players from his home state to call Northwest Indiana their summer home. On Wednesday, infielder Danny Pulfer became the 10th player from the Golden State to join this year's roster.
Pulfer comes from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, where he spent two seasons playing for the club's Rookie and Short-Season affiliates. In 2012, Pulfer played in the rookie Pioneer League with the Missoula Osprey and won the league championship. Playing mostly as a second baseman, he batted .285/.348/.395 with two homers, 10 doubles, three triples and 27 RBI. On June 27, Pulfer hit for the cycle, going 4-for-6 with six RBI on his way to Pioneer League Player of the Week honors.
Pulfer, 23, was selected by the Diamondbacks in the 19th round of the 2011 draft. He played for the Short-Season Yakima Bears that year and batted .258 with two homers and 20 RBI. Pulfer played for three seasons at the University of Oregon, where he was named First-Team All-Pac 10 in 2011.
To create room for Pulfer on the roster, the RailCats traded outfielder Asif Shah to the Quebec Capitales of the Can-Am League in exchange for cash considerations and the reversionary rights to outfielder Rony Rodriguez.
Shah was acquired in a trade from the Lincoln Saltdogs on July 28 of last season and played in just one game for the RailCats, going 0-for-5. Rodriguez played in 46 games for Quebec in 2012 and batted .233/.323/.438 with six home runs, 10 doubles and 15 RBI. He is currently in the Chicago Cubs organization and the RailCats hold his rights should he be released by the Cubs.
The RailCats roster now sits at 28, the league maximum during the pre-season. RailCats Opening Day is May 16 at 7:10 p.m. against the Lincoln Saltdogs at U. S. Steel Yard.
