Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY â The Gary SouthShore RailCats (Northern League) have extended spring training invitations to three additional players, as a result of the players' performance in the open tryout conducted by the RailCats at RailCats Stadium.
Outfielders Vincent Griffin and Brian Wolotka and right-handed pitcher Daniel Soria all will attend the RailCats' spring training, which begins Friday at RailCats Stadium. The three will attend training camp as non-roster invitees â as yet, none has been signed to a 2003 contract.
The trio was culled from a group of 53 players who assembled at RailCats Stadium at 9 a.m. for the tryout. RailCats manager Garry Templeton and coaches Scott May (pitching) and Brent Bowers (hitting) put the players through a series of drills designed to enable the coaches to evaluate the players' hitting, running, throwing, and pitching abilities.
All three of the players who received spring training invites are from Chicago and Northwest Indiana, and all three have previous collegiate or professional playing experience.
GRIFFIN, 28, played five seasons of independent baseball in the Mid-American, Heartland, and Frontier Leagues from 1996-2000. The Chicago resident batted .355 in 1996 with the Dubois County Dragons of the Heartland League.
WOLOTKA, 22, was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 24th round of the 2001 draft and played two seasons in the Devil Rays' farm system before being released this spring. Wolotka graduated from Munster High School and played collegially at Valparaiso University.
SORIA, 22, a senior at Chicago State University, is 1-6, 9.05 ERA in 15 appearances this spring for the Cougars. The right-hander resides in East Chicago and previously played at South Suburban College.
The Gary SouthShore RailCats are the new, professional minor league baseball team serving northwest Indiana and Chicago's south suburbs. The RailCats play their inaugural home opener at RailCats Stadium on Memorial Day, May 26. RailCats spring training begins May 9. A complete RailCats game schedule can be viewed on the RailCats website â www.railcatsbaseball.com.
