Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

(SIOUX FALLS, SD) – Very few Northern League teams have had the success with open try-out camps that the Sioux Falls Canaries have had. In 2000, the camp produced fan favorite and local utility man Brian Hunt and last season, INF Doug Dreher, who went on to hit .305 with the club, made the team thanks to a strong try-out. The two new names to add to the list are former Dakota Wesleyan standouts, LHP Jacoby Marshall and catcher Cody Palmer. Marshall has inked a contract and will be on the active roster for the Birds when the club opens Spring Training on Friday while Palmer has joined the team as the bullpen catcher.

Heading into Spring Training, Marshall signs with the Birds as a left-handed relief man, but can also swing the bat. After earning First Team All-GPAC as a pitcher after his 2002 junior year, Marshall was tabbed as the First Team Designated Hitter at the conclusion of the 2003 season. The 6'1, 205 pound Warrenton, Oregon native led the GPAC in ERA his junior season with a 1.48 mark.

Palmer, who hails from Vancouver, WA was named First Team All-GPAC following his recently completed senior year after hitting .353 with seven home runs and 43 RBI. He finished second in the conference his junior season with 13 home runs.

The Canaries 2003 Spring Training opens this Friday with all workouts open to the public. The exhibition season gets underway Sunday evening at 5:03 PM when the Birds host the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

The Birds kick off the 2003 season on May 23rd in Schaumburg before opening up the home schedule with a May 26th clash against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Great season tickets and mini plans are now on sale and can be ordered by calling (605) 333-0179.
