Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Joliet, Ill.âJayson Drobiak hit two home runs and drove in seven runs to lead the Joliet JackHammers to a 9-3 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats in the rubber match of a three game series Sunday. The RailCats fall to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
With Gary leading 1-0 in the third, Joliet sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs to take command. RailCats starting pitcher Mike Schaefer did not allow a base hit over the first two innings but did not survive the third as the JackHammers put the first six batters in the inning on base. Schaefer (0-1) allowed four hits and four runs over two and two-thirds innings with two walks and three strikeouts. He also hit two batters including one with the bases loaded.
Cody Fisher replaced Schaefer on the mound and allowed a three-run homer to Drobiak in the fourth and a two-run shot to the same hitter in the sixth. Fisher struggled with his control, walking three batters who scored on Drobiak's home runs.
The RailCats took advantage of an error to get on the board in the second inning. Jose Yepez walked to begin the inning, went to second on Steve Haake's single and advanced to third when David Weiner grounded into a double play. Joliet shortstop John Lackaff dropped Jay Pecci's ground ball for an error as Yepez scored for the game's first run.
The RailCats out-hit Joliet 10-7 as Haake continued his hot hitting, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Haake is now 6 for 12 on the year. Tanner Townsend also had two hits for Gary.
The RailCats 2005 home opener is Monday at 7:00 PM against the Edmonton Cracker-Cats at U. S. Steel Yard.
