Williams, Austin power RedHawks to victory

FARGO, N.D. â The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks got a pair of home runs from Clyde Williams, a grand slam from Richard Austin and stellar pitching from starter Mike Peschel to claim a 9-3 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo. The victory gave Fargo-Moorhead a sweep of the three-game series.
Williams staked Fargo-Moorhead to a 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning with the first of his two solo home runs in the game. Russ Jacobson tied the game in the top of the third inning with a solo shot of his own. The RedHawks reclaimed the lead with one run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth. Williams hit his second homer in the fourth, and the âHawks got a sacrifice fly from Kelley Gulledge and an RBI double from Williams in the fifth.
After the Goldeyes cut the Fargo-Moorhead lead to 4-2 on an RBI double by Rusty McNamara in the seventh, Austin sealed the Goldeyes fate with his grand slam off Winnipeg reliever Carlos Torres. Brent Krause came in to score later in the inning on a pair of Goldeyes fielding errors for a 9-2 RedHawks lead.
Peschel (1-0) picked up the victory for the RedHawks. He allowed two runs on three hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Winnipeg starter Steve Murray (0-1) took the loss. He allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits over 6.0 innings pitched.
Williams finished the day 3-for-4 with a pair of homers, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Austin was also 3-for-4 with a grand slam and one run scored.
Following an off day on Monday, the RedHawks begin a six-game road trip on Tuesday night against the Schaumburg Flyers at Alexian Field in Schaumburg. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Fans can hear Jack Michaels call all the action on WDAY AM 970.
