St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN – The St. Paul Saints won their first game of the season in style Sunday. St. Paul set a Northern League record with 10 doubles and Tonayne Brown had the first five-hit game of his 729-game pro career in a 15-2 romp past Schaumburg Sunday before 5,455 fans at Midway Stadium.

Brown tied a team record for most hits by a player in a game two singles, two doubles and a triple as part of a 22-hit attack against five Flyer pitchers as the Saints improved to 1-2. Billy Munoz and Chad Ehrnsberger each had three hits (including a pair of doubles apiece) as the Saints batted around in the third and fourth innings to break the game open.

Darren Truty (1-0) cruised through eight innings to earn the victory.

Held to just seven runs and 14 hits in losing the first two games of the series with the Flyers, St. Paul got things going early. In the first inning, Justin Hall singled and raced home on Adam Olow's double. Brown hit first two-bagger one out later and the Saints took off from there.

In the third, the first nine batters reached base, chasing starter Blake Williams (0-1). Ehrnsberger, who drove in four runs, had a two-RBI single and plated two more the next inning with a double.

And so it went.

The 22 hits and 36 total bases were just two short of team records in that department. Eight of the nine starters had at least two hits, including Shoreview's Chris Weber, who was on base five times (two singles, three walks).

In the eight, Nigel Thatch, better known for playing the actor "Leon" in beer commercials, made his pro debut. Brown's second dopuble of the game – the recordbreaking blow – was the only hit Thatch allowed in a scoreless frame.

The Southern Division foes finish off their four-game series at Midway Monday night at 7:05 p.m. with Flyer lefty R.J. Swindle matched up against St. Paul righty Rich Cartier.
