Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

FARGO, ND- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (27-24) outlasted the Fargo Moorhead RedHawks (26-5) in a back-and-forth affair to even the series at one game apiece. The contest featured three lead changes and four home runs in the 8-7 RailCats win.

The RailCats overcame five errors by getting home runs by Brennan Metzger and Jose Gonzalez. Moises Melendez earned the win in relief after allowing just one run on a solo homer.

The home run barrage started early, with Josh Mazzola hitting his 15th of the year for Fargo in the 2nd frame. The solo shot made it 1-0 before the Redhawks added another run in the next inning. That score was the first of three unearned runs on the day with this one attributed to a mistake by third baseman Frank Martinez.

The RailCats evened the score at two in the top of the 4th with their first long-ball. Metzger launched one over the fence with EJ Devarie on base to tie it up. It was Metzger's first home run of the season.

Gary SouthShore took its first lead of the night in the 5th when John Holland and Jarred Mederos hit back-to-back doubles. Two more came across in the 6th with Metzger supplying a RBI triple.

The errors struck again in the bottom of the 6th with the Cats ahead 5-2. Jeremy Hamilton misplayed a ball hit by Bryan Johns and then threw it away to lead to two runs for Fargo. The RedHawks re-took the lead in the 7th with key hits from Keury De La Cruz and Dustin Geiger.

The RailCats needed a comeback, trailing 6-5 heading to the 8th. Gonzalez delivered the game-changing hit with a two-run blast over the wall at Newman Outdoor Field. The Cats walked their way to an insurance run to make the score 8-6.

Melendez allowed a solo home run to Ryan Pineda in the bottom of the 9th, but induced a crucial double play to secure the victory.

The RailCats enjoyed a quality start from Charle Rosario who went 6.2 innings and gave up three earned runs. It was the Cats' first win when committing four or more errors. Metzger and Mederos each had multi-hit days and every RailCat in the lineup recorded a hit.

The RailCats and RedHawks continue their four-game series tomorrow night with first pitch at 7:02 PM. Coverage begins at 6:38 on railcatsbaseball.com and will be joined in progress by 95.9 WEFM.
