Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA- The Gary South Shore RailCats lost for the second consecutive night to the Sioux City Explorers by a score of 7-6 on Thursday, splitting the four game series.
It looked like the Cats were going to run away with the game early on as they blew things open in the first inning. Danny Pulfer, Drew Martinez, Zac Mitchell and Ryan Babineau all hit consecutive singles to start the frame and the Cats were quickly on top 2-0. Mitchell scored on a wild pitch and Miles Walding drove in a pair with a base hit, giving the Cats a 5-0 advantage after a half inning.
Sioux City immediately began chipping away in the bottom half of the first, getting a run and cutting it to 5-1. Andres Perez had an RBI single in the third inning to make it 5-2.
In the top of the fifth, the first two Cats were retired before Wally Backman singled and Cody Bishop tripled, extending the lead back to 6-2.
The Explorers continued to cut into the lead, pushing across two runs in the sixth inning. In the eighth, still trailing 6-4, Tommy Mendonca came up with a two-out, two-RBI base hit to tie the game at 6-6.
Things stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth when, with two outs and nobody on base, Michael Lang drew a walk. He stole second and was driven in on a walk-off single by Rene Tosoni.
The RailCats come home for the weekend to start a series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes, a match-up between divisional leaders. First pitch is set for 7:10 and Dan Vaughan will have the call on WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
