Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- The Gary South Shore RailCats were unable to complete the three game sweep of the Amarillo Sox on Sunday, falling 7-6.
Amarillo wasted no time jumping on Cats' starter Stephen Hiscock, pushing three runs across in the first inning to take an early lead. The Cats got two of those runs right back in the bottom half as Danny Pulfer and Drew Martinez each singled to lead things off. Ryan Babineau drove them both in with a base hit to left field and brought the Cats back to 3-2.
Travis Weaver led off the top of the second with a walk and then later stole second. Joe Weik drove him in with a single and extended Amarillo's lead to 4-2. Kyle Bellows singled to start things in the fifth inning and Kyle Nichols followed with an RBI double to put Amarillo ahead 5-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Martinez continued to roll as he singled and stole second base. Babineau doubled as well, scoring Martinez and cutting the lead to 5-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Cats cut into Amarillo's lead and eventually jumped in front as Miles Walding and Josh Romanski each doubled to start the frame. Drew Muren doubled as well, scoring Romanski and making it a 6-5 game. A sacrifice fly from Pulfer was enough to score Muren and give the Cats a 6-5 lead.
Unfortunately, the Cats could not hold on to the advantage for very long as the Sox got another run in the top of the seventh inning, ending the day for Hiscock as Greg Tagert went to the bullpen with the game tied at 6-6. Things stayed the same until the top of the ninth as Ian Kadish retired the first two hitters of the inning before giving up a double to Jeff Farnham. Travis Weaver came up next and layed a bunt down the third base line. Pulfer bare-handed the ball but threw a little wide of first base as the ball got down the line near the Sox bullpen, allowing Farnham to score and give Amarillo the lead. The Cats went down in order in their final at-bat as the Sox held on for the 7-6 victory.
The RailCats head out for a four game series with the Sioux City Explorers starting Monday night for a 7:05 game. Dan Vaughan will have the call on WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com. The Cats come back home next weekend to start a three game series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Friday, July 25th at 7:10.
