Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Joliet, Ill. Nathan Haynes had three hits including a two-run home run and Willie Glen threw seven strong innings as the Gary SouthShore RailCats won for the seventh time in the last 10 games, defeating the Joliet JackHammers 6-2. The RailCats improved their record to 10-14. Joliet is 7-16.
The RailCats took the lead in the Alex Taylor reached on an error by Joliet shortstop Eddie Romprey, the first of five Joliet errors in the game. One batter later, Haynes drilled a long home run to right center field, his fourth homer of the year, to give Gary a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Eric McNamee singled with one out and went to second on Haynes' base hit to right. After Steve Haake flied to left to advance the runners to second and third, Jermaine Allensworth walked to load the bases. Tanner Townsend followed with a hard grounder to the right of second base that was misplayed by Joliet second baseman Chad Ehrnsberger for an error allowing two runs to score to make it 4-0.
Glen allowed a solo home run to Bubba Smith in the sixth, the only run allowed by Glen over seven innings. Glen (4-2) gave up six hits and walked one while striking out two to earn his club-record 13th career victory with the RailCats.
Joliet scored a single run in the eighth against the Gary bullpen. Kris Regas replaced Glen and gave up a lead-off single to Mike Goss. John Lackaff grounded to third and forced Goss at second. Ryan Miller replaced Regas on the mound and after getting Ehrnsberger to fly to left, he gave up a run-scoring double to Bubba Smith to make it 4-2 and bring the tying run to the plate. But Miller struck out Jayson Drobiak to end the inning.
Gary added two more unearned runs in the ninth. Taylor reached on an error and went to second on Haynes' single. Haake followed with a hard one-hopper to short that was too hot to handle for Romprey and carried into left field for an error. Taylor scored from second and Haynes went to third, then scored on Allensworth's sacrifice fly to close out the scoring.
Miller pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.
The two teams meet again Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Josh Habel (1-2, 9.35) will start for Gary against Luis Villarreal (1-3, 5.00). The RailCats open a six game homestand Friday against Kansas City at U. S. Steel Yard.
