Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- The Gary Railcats bounced back from a tough loss on Saturday to defeat the St. Paul Saints 5-3 Sunday in the series finale.
The Saints took the lead on an unearned run in the top of the first. With one out, Sam Maus reached on a Ryan Brockett error at short off of Stephen Hiscock. Willie Cabrera followed with a double to make it 1-0 St. Paul.
The RailCats answered in the second off of Jeff Shields. Josh Romanski gave the Cats a one out single and moved to second on an error by third baseman Jared McDonald . Danny Pulfer drove in Romanski with a single to center field, tying the game at 1-1. Drew Martinez followed that up with a two-RBI triple, giving the RailCats a 3-1 lead.
The Saints chipped away in the fifth inning, getting an RBI groundout from Jared McDonald, making it 3-2. With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Ryan Babineau walked and was knocked in on a Wally Backman double down the left field line. Backman was driven in by Romanski, who singled with two outs and gave the RailCats another important insurance run and pushing the score to 5-2.
In the top of the eighth, Ian Kadish gave up back to back singles to lead off the frame. Greg Tagert brought Chuck Fontana into the game to face Willie Cabrera who then singled off Fontana, loading the bases with no outs. Fontana got on track with a strikeout of Angelo Sonco and then got Evan Bigley to fly out to right, which scored a run but more importantly gave the RailCats the second out of the inning. An error by Ryan Brocket allowed the inning to continue, loading the bases for the second time in the frame. However, Ethan Gibbons was able to induce a groundout to end the inning and preserve the 5-3 lead for the RailCats.
In the ninth, James Parr came on for the save and notched it with ease, getting the Saints to go down in order and finishing the ballgame with a strikeout of Maus. The 5-3 victory for the RailCats meant a series victory as well with the RailCats taking two out of three from the visiting Saints. The RailCats will have an off day Monday before getting back on the road again starting Tuesday. The RailCats will be in Fargo for a three game set, followed by three more in Winnipeg. First pitch is set for 7:00 on Tuesday and Dan Vaughan will have the call on WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
