Gary, Ind.âThe Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club added power and speed on Wednesday, acquiring outfielder Steve Haake and third baseman Tanner Townsend on a busy day for RailCats Manager and Director of Player Procurement Greg Tagert.
The RailCats sent pitcher Abel DeLoera and cash to Ohio Valley of the Frontier League in exchange for Haake and Townsend. With the acquisition of Townsend, the RailCats sold the contract of third baseman Juan Camacho to El Paso of the Central League.
Both Haake and Townsend spent each of the last two seasons playing for Tagert (with Springfield-Ozark in 2004 and Kenosha in '03).
Haake batted .290 with 10 home runs, 53 runs batted in, and 16 stolen bases with Springfield-Ozark last season. He played in 88 games. Haake is a product of Northwestern University, Southwestern Illinois Junior College, and Gibault High School (Belleville, Illinois). He stole 73 bases during his four year college career including the 2001-'02 seasons at Northwestern.
Camacho batted .263 with eight home runs and 30 RBI with the RailCats in 2004. DeLoera pitched out the bullpen for the RailCats in 2004, going 1-0 with a 4.91 earned run average in 21 appearances while walking 18 in 22 innings.
The RailCats 2005 home opener is set for May 23 against the Edmonton Cracker-Cats. The RailCats will host the Northern League All-Star Game on July 19. For 2005 ticket information, call (219) 882-BALL (2255).
