Lanier fills a tall order with signing of Pilkington
March 2, 2005 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
As a team, the Winnipeg Goldeyes just got taller. And, to hear manager Hal Lanier talk, they also got better.
The Winnipeg skipper announced today the signing of rookie pitcher Jason Pilkington. Able to start or come on in relief, the 6'6" southpaw from St. Catharines was acquired last week from Richmond of the independent Frontier League for a player to be named later.
"I've heard a lot of good things about Jason and that he has a very good arm," said Lanier. "We're just going to have to wait and see whether we're going to start him or have him come out of the bullpen, but it's a plus for us to have somebody like that who can do both."
Pilkington, 24, is a career 10-4 with a 2.51 ERA in two years of indy ball. He has seen more time as a starter than out of the bullpen, going 9-3 with a 2.47 ERA in 14 starts with both Rockford and Richmond of the Frontier League. He also saw time in the bullpen with Rockford as well as Niagara of the Canadian Baseball League.
A high jumper who earned a full track scholarship to the University of Georgia, Pilkington spent a year at the southern school before moving west to play at Central Arizona College. He helped the Vaqueros win the Junior College Div. I World Series in his junior year, the same year he was drafted by the White Sox, but never signed with the American League club.
Pilkington will be in town when the Goldeyes open training camp on Thursday, May 5. They play the first game of their eight-game exhibition season two days later in Fargo, the same place they open the regular season on Friday, May 20. Winnipeg plays its home opener Friday, May 27 against Sioux City.
Winnipeg now has 14 players under contract for the coming campaign, evenly divided between pitchers and position players.
FISH FOOD: Slugger Harry Berrios informed the Goldeyes on February 23 he was travelling overseas to try out for a league in Taiwan. He received the club's blessing and, in the event he is released, he will return to Winnipeg. In the meantime, the Goldeyes will continue to look for another veteran to take his spot on the roster.
