LAST TIME OUT: The Rail Yard Dawgs hung five goals in the first two periods but were held off the board in the third and lost to the Evansville Thunderbolts, 7-5, Friday night at the Ford Center. Colin Murray had a goal and an assist and Henry Dill made 14 saves on 15 shots in relief in the loss.
MAGIC NUMBER - 2: Roanoke's magic number to clinch a postseason berth is now two; any combination of two points gained by the Dawgs or lost by the Quad City Storm would put the Rail Yard Dawgs in the postseason. The most points the ninth-place Storm can finish with is 51 and the primary SPHL postseason tiebreaker is games won during the regular season. Six SPHL teams have clinched a postseason spot- Peoria, Birmingham, Huntsville, Knoxville, Fayetteville and Macon are all in.
ALMOST HOME: The Rail Yard Dawgs will conclude their prolonged road swing this weekend in Evansville. Roanoke's last ten games have come on the road; it has not played at home since beating Huntsville, 4-3, on February 16 at Berglund Center. The Dawgs have gone 3-6-1 on the road swing thus far. Since their last home game they have played one game at Knoxville, three in Peoria, three at Quad City, two in Pensacola and one in Evansville. They will return home to clash with the Knoxville Ice Bears in one week on March 22.
POWER ON: Roanoke went 3-for-7 on the power play on Friday night, the most power play goals it has scored in a game this season. The Rail Yard Dawgs had scored two power play goals seven times prior in the 2018-19 season. Roanoke's man-advantage unit has now scored on 16.1% of its chances, the seventh-best power play in the SPHL.
QUICK HITS: The Rail Yard Dawgs' five goals were scored by five different players on Friday...Jordan Carvalho had two assists and is now tied for fourth in the league with 32...Carvalho and Colin Murray each had two points and are tied for the team lead with six multi-point games...Henry Dill has now appeared in five games with the Dawgs, three of which have come in relief...Jeff Jones is now one goal away from matching his career high of 20.
LOOK OUT FOR: Evansville's Shayne Morrissey netted a hat trick on Friday and now leads the SPHL with 24 goals. In his last 22 games, Morrissey has 18 goals. Despite only playing in 38 of Evansville's 49 games, he has accounted for 22.2% of the Thunderbolts' 108 goals this season.
DEFENSIVE BLIP: Roanoke has allowed 21 goals in its past four games and has gone 1-3-0 in that stretch. Seven goals against on Friday were the third-most the Dawgs have had scored against them in a game this season.
UP NEXT: The Rail Yard Dawgs return home to the Roanoke Valley to take on the Knoxville Ice Bears on Friday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Berglund Center.
