Evansville Thunderbolts News Release
Evansville, IN: Shayne Morrissey has stormed up the SPHL's goals leaderboards, and tonight his hat trick would not only earn him the lead in the league's goals scoring race, but also help propel the Thunderbolts over Roanoke in a goal-scoring bonanza, 7-5.
Down 1-0, Tim Besinger would tie the game at 7:41 on a set-up rushing to the net from Morrissey and Eric Salzillo. The Thunderbolts would then get their first of five, yes, five leads of the night, as Morrissey would tally his first goal at the 10:07 mark, on the power play from Besinger and Salzillo. Tied at 2-2 to start the second period, Nathan Ferriero would capitalize on a Roanoke turnover down low, finding the back of the net to make it 3-2 Evansville, at the 2:37 mark and unassisted, in Ferriero's first game back since missing the last month with injury. Now tied 3-3, the next lead would come from Morrissey, scoring on a delayed Roanoke power play on the rebound to make it 4-3 at the 6:59 mark from Frank Schumacher and Besinger. Tied once again, 4-4, the Thunderbolts would go shorthanded, however finding the back of the net shorthanded, as T.J. Roche, playing his first professional game out of Nichols College, scored on a rebound from Salzillo, making it 5-4 at the 12:26 mark, before Roanoke would tie the game to conclude the second period. In the third period, Ferriero would provide the go-ahead goal on the power play, at the 12:56 mark from Schumacher and Ben Campbell, who in the process also picked up his first professional point in his first professional game, joining the Thunderbolts along with Roche from Nichols College. It would prove to be the game-winning goal, as Morrissey would finish the hat trick with an empty net goal at 19:27 from L.J. Fellows, earning Fellows his first pro point as well in his second weekend with the Thunderbolts since coming over from Suffolk University.
For the Thunderbolts, Morrissey picked up three goals and an assist, Ferriero tallied two goals, Besinger had a goal and two assists, and Roche had a goal as well. Salzillo finished with three assists, and Schumacher finished with two of his own. Alex Murray earned the win in net, finishing with 24 saves.
