LAST TIME OUT: Roanoke scored three times in the second period to take a 3-1 lead but Peoria netted two in the third to force overtime before defeating the Rail Yard Dawgs, 4-3, Friday night at the Berglund Center. Zach Tatrn scored two goals, Cody Walsh had a goal and an assist and James Kruger stopped 34 of the 38 shots he faced in the losing effort.
THE OTHER GUYS: Peoria enters Saturday tied for third place in the SPHL with 64 points, even with the Fayetteville FireAntz. The Rivermen have points in 12 of their last 13 games. Saturday marks the fifth and final meeting of the season between the Dawgs and Rivermen.
SCOREBOARD WATCHING: With eight games remaining in its regular season, Roanoke is now deadlocked in a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot with the Columbus Cottonmouths. While both teams have 37 standings points, Columbus has played two fewer games. The Rail Yard Dawgs face the Cottonmouths three more times this season, with all three games taking place at the Berglund Center.
UNWELCOME SIGHT: The Rail Yard Dawgs have gone 0-3-1 against the Rivermen this season, with Peoria representing the only team in the SPHL that Roanoke has not defeated. The Dawgs were outscored by the Rivermen, 15-6, during a three-game sweep in Peoria from 3/3-5 and after Friday's 4-3 overtime loss, have now been outscored a combined 19-9 by Peoria this season.
MAN DOWN...LAMP LIT: Zach Tatrn's second goal on Friday came with the Rail Yard Dawgs working shorthanded, Tatrn's second shorthanded goal and the fifth for the Rail Yard Dawgs. Roanoke now has the third most shorthanded goals in the SPHL this season and Tatrn is one of 11 players in the circuit with multiple shorthanded goals.
WORKING OVERTIME: Saturday was Roanoke's tenth overtime game this season, with the Dawgs having gone 3-7 during such occasions. Only two of the eight games have gone into a shootout and Roanoke is 1-1 in the skills competition.
TATRN RHYMES WITH SATURN: Zach Tatrn scored twice during the 4-3 overtime loss to Peoria on Friday and now has six goals in his last six games. It was Tatrn's first multi-goal game in the SPHL and pushed his Rail Yard Dawgs total to 10 goals along with 7 assists in 25 games. Prior to joining the Dawgs in January, Tatrn had seven goals and 17 assists over 26 games for the Port Huron Prowlers of the Federal Hockey League.
POWER OUTAGE: The Rail Yard Dawgs went 0-for-6 on the power play on Friday night and have now not scored in their last 11 chances on the man advantage. Roanoke's 13.4% power play success rate is the second-lowest in the SPHL.
UP NEXT: The Rail Yard Dawgs will stay at home for the upcoming weekend to host the Columbus Cottonmouths for two games. Friday's puck drop is set for 7:05 PM at the Berglund Center.
