Raiders Fall 8-1 to Top Ranked ICE
January 18, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release
The Prince Albert Raiders were in tough against the #1 ranked team in the CHL on Wednesday night, falling by an 8-1 final.
The ICE had a couple of quick chances to open the scoring while shorthanded in the first period. First, a two on one rush resulted in a shot off the post. A second chance just moments later with Matthew Savoie on a breakaway was foiled by a huge save by Tikhon Chaika, keeping things scoreless.
After a long scoreless stretch to start the game, the ICE found the icebreaker with 2:28 left in the first period. After an ICE forward stole the puck from Chaika's glove as he was trying to cover it, Winnipeg went to work in the offensive zone. Circling around, Savoie found Connor McClennon perched near the top of the crease and fed him a pass. McClennon was able to do the rest from there, as he buried his 21st goal of the season past a diving Chaika to give the ICE a 1-0 lead.
With 14 seconds left in the first, the ICE doubled their lead. From just above the circle, Carson Lambos took a shot that fooled a screened Chaika blocker side. Lambos tallied his fifth goal of the season with the late strike, as Winnipeg took a 2-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.
It took just 40 seconds into the second period for the Raiders to find their first goal of the game. It was former Winnipeg ICE forward Hayden Pakkala who delivered for Prince Albert. A point shot from Easton Kovacs was blocked in front, and Pakkala was able to spin around and fire a shot past Daniel Hauser to make it a 2-1 game.
From there, however, it was all Winnipeg in the second, as they rattled off three straight goals. Zach Benson, Conor Geekie, and former Raider Carson Latimer all score for the ICE, with two of those tallies coming on the man advantage. Outshooting the Raiders 27-12 through 40 minutes, Winnipeg took a 5-1 lead heading into the third.
In the third Winnipeg added three more goals from Lambos, Ty Nash, and Easton Armstrong to win by an 8-1 final.
The Raiders (15-24-3-0) head to Saskatoon on Friday night for the first half of a home and home with the Blades. Puck drop is 7pm.
