Madison Mallards News Release

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI - August 2, 2011. The season-high six-game winning streak for the Madison Mallards came to an abrupt end Tuesday night, as the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters defeated the Mallards 7-4 at Witter Field. The Rafters were able to jump out to a three-run lead after two innings of play and proved to be too much for Madison to handle as pitching also held the Mallards to two runs over the final eight innings.

It appeared as if the Mallards were track to keep their winning streak in tact following a two-run top of the first inning. Justin Parr (Illinois) led off with a single and scored on another hit by Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin). Owen would then come around to score on a single by Andrew Barna (Davidson).

Despite the hot start of the offense, pitcher Jonathon Crawford (Florida) could not keep the Rafters in check.

Rapids scored a combined total of five runs over the first three innings to jump out to a 5-2 lead. Brandon Hohl (Illinois) scored the first Rafters' run on a fielder's choice, and Sam Montgomery (Oregon State) scored on a hit by Josh Cyr (North Alabama) to finish the second inning action. In the third, Kyle Peterson (Eastern Michigan) came in on a wild pitch, Justin Jirschele (Wisconsin - Oshkosh) had an RBI, and Hohl scored for the second time in the game on a bases loaded walk.

Madison scored twice in the fifth, as Kyle Moody (St. Scholastica) doubled and drove in Michael Handel (Minnesota). Moody would then score on a hit by Parr to bring the deficit to one at 5-4.

That would be all the Mallards would get offensively, as the Rafters would shut the team down the rest of the way.

Wisconsin Rapids also tacked on two runs in the fifth to provide the game's winning margin.

Crawford ended up taking the loss for the Mallards and is now 2-2 on the season following a three inning start in which he gave up five runs on four hits. He gave up four walks and had one wild pitch and hit batter as well.

Wisconsin Rapids reliever Kevin Wild (Valparaiso) picked up his first win of the season after pitching innings six through eight. He allowed only two hits and notched six strikeouts, moving to 1-5 on the season. Joie Dunyon (California - Riverside) pitched the ninth to get his fifth save.

The Mallards and Rafters will return to Madison for a 7:05 p.m. game Wednesday. The game will be the finale of a two-game home-and-home series, and will be the final time both teams face each other this season.
