Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Wausau, WI - July 16, 2012 - The Rafters went into Wausau to take on the first place Wisconsin Woodchucks Monday. The Woodchucks stayed perfect at home in the second half, winning their tenth straight at Athletic Park, beating Wisconsin Rapids 9-7.
The Woodchucks took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Rafters quickly pounced on started Jake Peter in the second. The Rafters loaded the bases on two walks and a single, and Aaron Gretz (FR, Ohio State Univ.) singled in two on infield single.
After the Woodchucks tied it, the Rafters retook the lead in the third. Pat Kelly (FR, Univ. of Nebraska) hit his second home run, and Brandon Hohl (JR, Univ. of Illinois) doubled in a run to take a 4-2 lead.
Bo Henning (SO, Sacramento City College) made his strongest start in his third outing as a Rafter. Taking a two-run lead into the fifth, Henning allowed a second home run to J.D. Davis, a two-run shot, to tie the game at 4-4. He would leave with the no decision, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing 4 runs, all earned, on six hits and three walks. Henning struck out three after just one strikeout in both of his first two starts.
The Woodchucks scored three in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead and would lead the rest of the way. The Rafters got within one run but came up just short. Aaron Gretz knocked in three runs on the night, picking up first homer. Pat Kelly's homer extended his hitting streak to 13 games and his on-base streak to 19.
Relievers took the decisions, as Kenny Towns (0-2) took the loss, and Ben Burke (1-0) got the win. Max Ising, with a perfect ninth, snagged his sixth save. The Rafters still lead the season series against the Woodchucks. They are 4-3 against them, and the teams have played all seven games by a one or two-run margin.
The Rafters (5-6, 21-25 overall) play the Woodchucks (10-1, 27-19) at home Tuesday night. It will be guaranteed win night at Witter Field. If they Rafters do not win, all fans in attendance will get a ticket to a future Rafters 2012 regular season home game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
