Honkers Swept by Beetles

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers dropped their second game in a row to the Alexandria Beetles on Monday afternoon by a final score of 9-5 in Rochester, MN.

The Honkers did not pick up their first base hit until the bottom of the sixth inning when second baseman Justin Protacio (Kansas) reached on an infield single. The very next batter, center fielder Dakota Smith (Kansas) belted a two-run homerun to left field to score the only two Honkers runs on the day.

Rochester starter Jared Miller (Vanderbilt) labored through his second consecutive outing of the summer. The tall lefty lasted just 4.1 innings and allowed seven total runs on nine hits and four walks. Miller now falls to 2-2 for the summer.

The Honkers scored three more runs in the bottom of the ninth on a Jordan Parr (Illinois) three-run homer to deep left field. Parr finished the afternoon 1 for 4 with three RBIs.

Alexandria starter Jon Reed (Walter State) was marvelous over his 8.0 innings of work as he surrendered just two runs on two hits while striking out 11 Honkers. Reed is now 4-1 on the season.

Honkers reliever Phil Richmond (Coe) worked an impressive eighth inning striking out the side and not giving up a run.

The Honkers travel to Mankato tomorrow, July 17th, to begin a three-game set with the MoonDogs at 7:05 PM. On the hill for the Honkers will be righty Dylan Nelson (San Mateo). Nelson is 0-2 in 16.1 innings of work with a 3.86 ERA.

The Honkers and MoonDogs will bring the series to Rochester on Wednesday, July 17th and play the second game of the series. The game on Wednesday is scheduled to start at 7:05 PM at Mayo Field.
