Worcester Bravehearts News Release
The weather was scorching hot as the calendar flipped to July, but the Worcester Bravehearts' bats were ice cold in a 5-0 defeat to the Martha's Vineyard Sharks on July 1 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
Sharks starter Matt Quintana improved to 2-1 this season after pitching eight scoreless innings and allowing only one hit while striking out 14 Bravehearts. His only blunder was a 1-0 pitch hit up the middle by Worcester first baseman and Holy Cross junior Shane Sandoval. But Quintana worked quickly against the Bravehearts, as he threw 94 pitches with 71 of them for strikes.
Martha's Vineyard reliever Matt Binder capped off the victory by striking out three, which brought the Bravehearts' strikeout total to 17. However, Bravehearts catcher Thomas Paine broke up the combined one-hitter with a single to right field in the ninth inning.
The Sharks got on the board in the fifth inning with a solo home run by shortstop Will Toffey off Worcester starter Aaron Civale. Toffey, a recent 23rd round draft pick by the New York Yankees, had only one hit but finished with three runs scored. Civale took the loss in 5.2 innings pitched and dropped to 1-1 on the season. Civale allowed three runs with only one earned and struck out five.
With runners on the corners and no outs in the sixth inning, the Sharks took advantage of a costly throwing error to tack on some insurance. Paine's throw down to second attempting to catch Toffey stealing went wide left and into center field, which allowed a run to score. Left fielder Brian Campbell hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Toffey and make it a 3-0 ball game.
Martha's Vineyard added two more runs in the eighth inning to seal the victory.
The 16-8 Bravehearts will attempt to bounce back against the North Shore Navigators at 7:05 p.m. July 2 at Hanover Insurance Park.
