LOWELL, MA - Goaltender Jonathan Quick collected his first shutout of the season with the Manchester Monarchs as the rookie stopped all 27 shots from the Lowell Devils in the 1-0 win in front of 3,028 fans at the Tsongas Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester (30-28-5-4) is in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 69 points, one point behind the fourth place Springfield Falcons (30-27-5-5, 70 points). Lowell (21-34-7-4) is in seventh place in the Atlantic Division with 53 points.
In a game that had one penalty, 27 shots by each team, only one goal and completed in exactly two hours, the Monarchs finished off four games in five days by collecting seven out of eight possible points to move closer to Springfield in the standings for the final playoff spot. The lone goal of the game came off the stick of defenseman Troy Milam at 1:52 of the third period. Manchester skated into the Devils zone and set up with traffic in front of goaltender Dave Caruso. The puck was slid to Milam at the right point by rookie center Marc-Andre Cliche. Milam's slap shot from the top of the right face-off circle traveled through bodies and hit the back of the net for his 11th goal of the season. Left wing Paul Crosty earned the second assist on the game-winning goal.
Quick earned the shutout win stopping 27-of-27 shots. Caruso took the loss with 26 saves.
Manchester did not have a power play. Lowell was 0-for-1 with the man advantage.
In nine head-to-head games between Manchester and Lowell, the Monarchs have won just two games, lost six in regulation and lost one game in a shootout. The final game between these two teams will be in Lowell on Friday, April 4.
