Quebec Tops Cutters 3-2

Quebec City, Quebec- July 23, 2004) Buck McNabb's RBI infield single off Greg McCarthy in the eighth scored Geof Tomlison as the Quebec Les Capitales edged the New Haven County Cutters 3-2. McCarthy (0-2) took the loss for the second consecutive night. Ben Grezlovski recorded the final two outs in the eight for Les Capitales to earn the win and improve to 7-1 on the season.

In the top of the ninth, Jose Mateo singled and stole second and third, but Quebec closer Alex Santos was able to retire the next three batters to pick up his tenth save of the season. The Cutters are now 26-26 on the season and drop to 1-4 in the second half.

In the top of the second, Billy Rich's broken bat single scored Kevin Forbes giving New Haven an early 1-0 lead. For Rich, it was his fourteenth RBI of the season. Later in the inning, Nick Hiter, who was making his first start as a DH, added a RBI single in the second extending the lead to 2-0

In the 5th, the Cutters looked to add to their lead as with one out Hector Lebron and Darren Ciraco reached base on back to back singles. Two batters later, Adam Shorsher reached on an infield hit loading the bases with two out for Billy Rich. However, Quebec starter Keith Dunn got Rich to fly out to center to end the inning and the threat. Dunn allowed two runs on eleven hits in 7 and 1/3 innings.

The game remained 2-0 New Haven until the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Bonesio retired the first two batters of the inning, but then gave up an infield single to Sam Bozanich and walked Wally Quigg putting runners on first and second with two out.

Bonesio was then replaced by right hander Tim Keinath who gave up consecutive RBI singles to Lee Delfino and Olivier Lepine tying the game at two. Greg McCarthy was then called upon to replace Keinath and got Benoit Emond to fly out to end the inning. New Haven starter Ryan Bonesio received a no decision after allowing two runs on three hits in six and 2/3 innings.
