Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas – The bad news for the Round Rock Express was that 12 runners were left on base. The good news is that the one that did score was all Chad Qualls would need.

Qualls mowed through the El Paso Diablos for eight innings and the Express scratched through a nearly as effective Phil Stockman for a run in the seventh to fight through for a 1-0 victory.

10,648 at The Dell Diamond saw Qualls finish the best month as a professional in spectacular fashion. After struggling through June and posting a 7.40 earned run average, Qualls began a dramatic turnaround in July, starting with a complete game shutout against the Diablos on July 4. Since then, he has been Saarloos-esque and will finish the month 3-1 with a 1.35 ERA, including 17 straight shutout against El Paso.

"I've really tried to be more focused mentally out there (this month)," Qualls said. "To really work on the task at hand. I try not to look at stats, but it's nice to put up some zeroes and get the team a few wins."

Stockman was impressive as well, dodging in and out of danger. However, he got in trouble in the seventh when Round Rock loaded the bases. He gave way to Mark Freed and then Jesus Silva. Tommy Whiteman hit a hard grounder to third baseman Brian Barden. He stepped on third for one out, but threw high to first for an error, allowing the only run to score.

Qualls (6-9) got the win and Eric Cammack threw a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Stockman (10-5) was the loser

The series will continue Sunday at 7:05 p.m.
