Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Jeter Downs belted a pair of home runs and the Quakes handed the San Jose Giants their eighth straight home loss, with a 7-3 Rancho victory on Saturday evening at Excite Ballpark in San Jose.
Downs, who had never had a multi-homer game in his career, drilled a two-run shot in the third and added a solo homer in the seventh, as the Quakes won for a second straight day in San Jose.
Quakes' starter Wills Montgomerie suffered from some command issues, but the Giants couldn't touch him when he was in the strike zone. Montgomerie allowed five walks and hit a batter over 4 2/3 innings, but didn't allow a single hit.
The Quakes didn't allow their first hit of the game until Giants' center fielder Logan Baldwin opened the eighth with a single off Austin Hamilton.
The Giants got a run in the first without the aid of a hit, but the Quakes went on to score the game's next seven runs.
Starling Heredia gave Rancho the lead for good in the second, as he laced a two-run homer to left, making it 2-1 against Giants' starter Aaron Phillips (0-4).
Down's third homer of the year and first of two on the night made it 4-1 in the third.
Leading 7-1 in the eighth, Hamilton allowed two runs on three hits, but stranded the bases loaded, as the Giants made it a game at 7-3. Hamilton recovered to work a 1-2-3 ninth, helping Rancho win for the 14th time in 19 road games this year.
Logan Salow (2-0) was credited with the win, as he worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Tony Cingrani, making his first rehab appearance with the Quakes in 2019, pitched a scoreless seventh inning and didn't allow a hit. He faced four hitters as one man reached on an error, but threw 16 total pitches.
The Quakes (19-11) will look for their second road-sweep of the year on Sunday at 1:00pm, as they face the Giants in the series-finale. Victor Gonzalez (1-1) will take on DJ Myers (1-1) in game three of the three-game set.
The Quakes will return home on Tuesday, May 7th, hosting Inland Empire in game one of a three-game series. Tuesday is Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday, as fans can bring ten CRV-eligible bottles and cans to the ballpark for a free Club Seat Ticket. Game time is 7:05pm and tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at LoanMart Field...Go Quakes!
