Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Alexis Aguilar's walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth inning gave Rancho Cucamonga a 6-5 come-from-behind win over the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night, in front of more than 5,000 fans at The Epicenter.
Aguilar, who was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts prior to the hit, was a late insertion into the lineup, as he replaced Joe Becker, who was promoted to Triple-A Albuquerque prior to the game.
Mavs' reliever Angel Raga (0-2) struck out all three Quakes he faced in the ninth, but couldn't get out of trouble in the tenth. Austin Gallagher opened the inning with a chopper to shortstop Brad Miller, who mishandled the short-hop and allowed the winning run to reach first base. C.J. Retherford then sacrificed Gallagher to second base for the first out of the inning. The Mavs elected to intentionally walk Jonathan Garcia, putting men at first and second. The Quakes made a strategic decision of their own, as Manager Juan Bustabad chose to pinch-run Charlie Mirabal for Gallagher at second base. Jarrad Page followed with a come-backer to Raga, who could only get Garcia at second, for the second out of the inning. With runners at the corners and Mike Pericht due up, High Desert decided to intentionally walk him as well, loading the bases for Aguilar, who delivered a shot to the left-center field gap, scoring Mirabal with the game-winner.
The Mavericks took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but Rancho responded with four in the bottom of the inning against starter Anthony Fernandez. The first four hitters reached safely against Fernandez, with Scott Wingo and Gallagher both reaching with run-scoring hits, giving the Quakes a 2-1 lead. After Retherford struck out for the first out of the inning, Garcia singled home a run, making it 3-1. Chris Jacobs followed with a double off the wall in left-center, capping the inning at 4-1.
High Desert got right back into it in the third, as Stefen Romero and Mario Martinez each clubbed a two-run homer off Quakes' starter JonMichael Redding, putting the Mavs in front 5-4.
Rancho got even in the sixth, as Pericht doubled home Garcia, tying the game at 5-5.
Quakes' reliever Eric Eadington (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
The win gives the Quakes two of three in the series over the Mavericks and knocks High Desert out of first place, as the Lancaster JetHawks, winners of five straight overall, now occupy the top spot by themselves in the South Division.
The Quakes (20-23) head to Inland Empire on Sunday afternoon, as Garrett Gould (0-4) takes on Max Russell (2-3) of the 66ers at 1:05pm.
On Sunday, May 27th, the Quakes return to The Epicenter, hosting Modesto and Lake Elsinore in a six-game home stand. Tickets are available by calling 909-481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
