Quakes Earn Wild Win In High Desert

June 11, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Gabe Jacobo equaled a team record, as he smashed three home runs on Thursday night, as the Quakes got out to a huge lead, then held on to defeat High Desert by a score of 15-12 at Mavericks Stadium.

Eddie McKiernan put the drama to bed in the ninth inning, as he worked a 1-2-3 ninth, after the Quakes' bullpen imploded for seven runs in the eighth inning, as the Mavericks turned a ten-run deficit to just three.

Jacobo's first homer, a two-run shot in the third inning off of Mavs' starter Andrew Carraway (4-3), put the Quakes up 4-1.

After High Desert got two in the bottom of the third against Quakes' starter Orangel Arenas (1-0), the Quakes blew it open with a seven-run fourth. Alexi Amarista highlighted the big inning with a three-run blast. Jacobo followed with a solo shot to cap the inning at 11-3.

The Mavs got a run back in the fifth, Arenas' final inning, to make it 11-4.

The Quakes got two in the seventh and then Jacobo got it going again in the eighth. Jacobo, who had not homered since May 5th, blasted his seventh of the year and third of the game, over the left-field fence to make it 14-5. Luis Jimenez followed with a triple, then scored on Eric Oliver's RBI single, capping the Quakes' scoring at 15-5.

That looked like plenty, but reliever Kyle Hurst struggled in the eighth. After two consecutive two-out bases-loaded walks, Hurst allowed an RBI single to Juan Diaz, making it 15-8. Christian Scholl was brought out of the bullpen to face Dennis Raben, who greeted Scholl with a grand slam down the right-field line, bringing High Desert to within just three at 15-12. Scholl got Rich Poythress to end the inning though, setting the stage for McKiernan's 11th save, a perfect ninth inning.

The Quakes (35-26) move to a season-high nine games over the .500 mark, but remain six games behind Lake Elsinore with nine to go in the first half.

Tyler Chatwood (7-2) takes on Nate Eovaldi of the Inland Empire 66ers on Friday night in San Bernardino, in the opening game of a three-game series. First pitch is at 7:05pm.

The Quakes return from their current seven-game road trip on Monday, June 14th, opening a six-game home stand with Grand Slam Monday. If a Quakes' player hits a Grand Slam on Monday night, then one Quakes' fan will win $1000. The upcoming home stand also includes a Terra Vista Animal Hospital "Bark in the Ballpark", a Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday, a $1 Family Feast Night and a Saturday Night Fireworks Spectacular! Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter very soon. Go Quakes!
