THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... continue their homestand this evening with the opener of a three-game series against the Bakersfield Blaze at Municipal Stadium. San Jose lost three out of four games to the visiting Modesto Nuts in their last series, including a 5-4 defeat in yesterday's contest. Modesto's Ryan Peisel hit a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning off of Giants reliever Edwin Quirarte to propel the Nuts to the series finale victory. Eric Surkamp started on the mound for San Jose and tossed seven effective innings with three runs (two earned) and six hits allowed. Brandon Belt, Aaron Lowenstein and Emmanuel Burriss each produced two hits to lead the Giants offensively. Wendell Fairley delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give San Jose a 4-3 lead before Peisel's home run in the ninth.

Division Lead Trimmed To Four Games; Magic Number At 7... The Giants (37-24) enter tonight's action with a four-game lead over Modesto (32-27) for the top spot in the first half North Division race. San Jose is attempting to win their sixth consecutive first half division title. Their five straight first half division crowns is a California League record. Including tonight, there are nine games remaining in the half for the Giants. San Jose's magic number (any combination of Giants wins and Modesto losses) to clinch the division title is seven.

Rare Series Loss... Yesterday's defeat gave San Jose their first series loss since they were swept in a four-game set by the High Desert Mavericks from May 7-10.

Five Giants Named To Cal League All-Star Team... Five San Jose Giants - first baseman Brandon Belt, outfielder Juan Perez and pitchers Justin Fitzgerald, Eric Surkamp and Craig Westcott - were named to the California League All-Star team yesterday. Belt, who will start at first base, is leading the league in batting average (.380), doubles (23), on-base percentage (.490) and walks (44). He's also third in slugging percentage (.600), tied for third in hits (78) and tied for fourth in RBI's (47). Perez, a starting outfielder in the All-Star game, is currently batting .329 with 18 doubles, five triples, seven homers, 31 RBI's and 11 stolen bases. Fitzgerald is a perfect 5-0 to go with a 2.09 ERA - third-lowest in the league. Surkamp is tied for fifth in the league with 62 strikeouts to go with a 2-1 record and a 3.41 ERA. Westcott boasts the lowest ERA in the league at 1.38 to go with a 3-0 record. The five selections matches the Lake Elsinore Storm for the most players chosen from one team. San Jose skipper Brian Harper will manage the squad. The California-Carolina League All-Star game will be played on June 22 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Emmanuel Burriss Continues Rehab Assignment... San Francisco Giant Emmanuel Burriss is scheduled to continue his rehabilitation assignment with San Jose in the series against Bakersfield. Burriss suffered a fractured left foot during spring training and has yet to play in a Major League game this season. The 25-year old middle infielder debuted with San Francisco two years ago. Last season with San Francisco, Burriss hit .238 with no home runs, 13 RBI's and 11 stolen bases in 61 games. He hit .283 with one homer and 18 RBI's over 95 games during his rookie campaign in 2008. Burriss was originally a supplemental first round draft pick of the San Francisco Giants four years ago and played in 36 games with San Jose in 2007 (. 165, 0 HR, 8 RBI). Burriss is 3-for-9 (.333) in the first three games of his rehab assignment. He is scheduled for a day off tonight before returning to action on Saturday.

Three Pitchers Among Top 10 In ERA... Three Giants pitchers are currently among the top 10 in the California League in ERA. Craig Westcott owns the lowest earned run average in the league (1.38) while Justin Fitzgerald is third (2.09) and Eric Stolp is tenth (3.27).

San Jose Looks To Continue Domination Of Blaze... The Giants are 12-4 this season against Bakersfield, including a 7-1 mark at Municipal Stadium. Brandon Belt is batting at a .491 clip (26-for-53) with seven doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI's in 16 games versus the Blaze.

Giants In The Cal League Rankings... Entering tonight, San Jose is second in the league in batting average (.282), third in runs scored (5.2), fourth in home runs (42) and first in stolen bases (105). On the mound, their 3.94 ERA is second in the league while their .974 fielding percentage is fourth.

Bakersfield Blaze... The Bakersfield Blaze, an affiliate of the Texas Rangers, enter tonight's action in last place in the North Division with a 25-34 record - 11 games out of the top spot. Bakersfield was swept at Stockton in their most recent series and has lost seven games in a row overall. The Blaze are currently ninth in the California League in batting average (.263), last in runs scored (4.2) and third in ERA (4.04). Wilmer Font is slated to make the start on the mound tonight. Font is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts with Bakersfield since receiving a promotion from Low-A Hickory.
