Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA-The Rancho Cucamonga were down to their last out and on the verge of falling 5.5 games behind Inland Empire with two weeks to go in the first half when Pat Reilly strode to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning at the Epicenter Sunday afternoon. Ahead in the count 3-1, Reilly demolished a fastball from Mumba Rivera over the trees beyond the right field wall for a game-tying grand slam, and Nate Sutton's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th won it for the Quakes as they completed a three-game sweep of the Sixers and cut Inland Empire's lead to just 3.5 games in the Southern Division. Rancho Cucamonga has won four in a row and is 30-27, while the 66ers fell to 33-23.
Inland Empire scored first on a solo home run by Yung Chi Chen, but the Quakes came back with two runs in the third on an RBI single by Ryan Leahy and a wild pitch. The Sixers retook the lead in the fifth on Chen's two-run single to make it 3-2, but the Quakes answered with one swing of the bat from Cliff Remole, as his two-run homer to right put Rancho Cucamonga back ahead 4-3.
Things got dicey after that however, as Joe Torres came out of the bullpen in the seventh and gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases before Josh Womack scored the tying run on a passed ball by Tim Duff to tie it at 4-4. Inland Empire then scored four times in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single by Matt Rogelstad and a squeeze bunt by Brent Johnson.
All that did was set the stage for Reilly though, as the Quakes took advantage of two free base runners. Cody fuller led off the ninth by walking on five pitches against Michael Hrynio, and Nate Sutton was then hit by a pitch. Pinch-hitter Baltazar Lopez struck out looking but Sean Rodriguez lined a single to left just over a leaping Ronnie Prettyman at third base to load the bases. The 66ers brought Rivera on in relief and he got Michael Collins to pop up on two pitches, but then threw the fastball Reilly was looking for. In the 10th Drew Toussaint led off with a double against Rivera, went to third on Duff's sacrifice, and scored two batters later on Sutton's deep fly ball over the head of Johnson in center.
Mike Pete (2-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning in the top of the 10th, while Rivera fell to 4-3 with the loss. Neither Quakes starter Francisco Rodriguez (six innings, three runs, eight hits) nor Sixers starter Ivan Blanco (six innings, four runs, seven hits) factored into the final decision despite throwing effectively. Reilly's home run was his fourth of the year and Remole's was his second, and Toussaint went 3-5 with two doubles.
The Quakes get a well-deserved day off on Monday before opening a 10-game, three-city road trip Tuesday night at 6:35 in Visalia. The game will be carried live on KWRM-AM 1370 and online at www.rcquakes.com. Jose Arredondo (3-3, 2.00 ERA) will start for the Quakes and lefty Jonathan Barratt (2-2, 5.13 ERA) will start for the Oaks. For more information, please call the Quakes at (909) 481-5000.
