Diaz Dazzles in Quakes Debut
June 4, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA-Amalio Diaz looked anything but a 19-year-old making his California League debut, tossing five shutout innings as the Quakes doubled up Inland Empire 4-2 before 6,368 fans at the Epicenter Saturday night. The win brought the Quakes (29-27) to within 4.5 games of the 66ers (33-22) for first place in the Southern Division with 15 games left to play in the first half.
The Sixers looked like they had Diaz figured out early, as Brent Johnson led off the game with a triple to right-center. Johnson never had the chance to leave third however, as Diaz got three straight pop-ups to end the frame. Then for the second straight night the Quakes got a run in the bottom of the first, as Nate Sutton led off with a single and eventually scored on a double-play groundout by Michael Collins.
That lead was plenty for Diaz who allowed just one hit and one walk over the next four innings before Dan Hawkins come on in the sixth. Inland Empire got runners to the corners with two out against Hawkins in the sixth, but Marshall Hubbard flied out harmlessly to left to end the threat, and the Quakes would then put the game away in the bottom of the inning. Pat Reilly started the deciding rally with a solo home run to left-center after a long battle with starter Robert Rohrbaugh, and Cliff Remole followed with a single to chase Rohrbaugh and bring on Jon Lockwood. With Drew Toussaint at the plate Lockwood tried to sneak a high fastball past him on a 3-2 count, but Toussaint turned on it and hammered the ball into the pine trees past the left-center fence to put the Quakes up 4-0.
Inland Empire got a run back on a sacrifice fly in the eighth and eventually got the tying run on base against Frederic DeLoizaga-Carney in the ninth. With Rancho Cucamonga not wanting to take any chances, closer Kevin Jepsen came on in relief for the second straight night. A passed ball by Collins moved Josh Womack to second base as the potential tying run, but Sean Rodriguez made a great sliding stop on Johnson's hard hit grounder up the middle and threw him out by two steps to preserve the win.
Diaz (1-0) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three in his impressive debut, while Rohrbaugh (4-1) surrendered three runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings after allowing just one run in his previous 17.1 innings. Jepsen's save was his eighth. In addition to his eighth home run, Toussaint also doubled to finish 2-3. Rodriguez chipped in a pair of singles and Reilly's home run was his third.
The Quakes will look for the sweep Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. The game will be carried live on KWRM-AM 1370 and online at www.rcquakes.com. Francisco Rodriguez (1-5, 4.26 ERA) will start for the Quakes and Ivan Blanco (5-3, 3.31 ERA) will start for Inland Empire. For more information, please call the Quakes at (909) 481-5000.
