Quakes batter Mavs
September 9, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes opened the playoffs with a statement, battering the Mavs around in a 12-5 blowout Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.
Just two batters into the game, Alberto Rosario hit the first of five homers for the Quakes to give them an early advantage.
With Rancho Cucamonga still leading 1-0 in the third, the biggest pitch of the game was one that wasn't even put in play. The Quakes had runners at second and third with two outs. Gabe Jacobo struck out, but the third strike was in the dirt and got past Trevor Coleman.
Not only did the Quakes score, but the inning stayed alive. After a walk to load the bases, Angel Castillo unloaded them with a grand slam to put the Quakes up 6-0.
The Mavs were able to get right back in the game with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Johermyn Chavez hit a bases-clearing double, and Kuo Hui Lo added an RBI single to make it 6-4.
Chavez led off the fifth with a booming solo homer to cut the deficit back to one.
With the Quakes reeling a bit, they got a huge boost in the sixth. Mike Trout hit one off the batter's eye in center field, and the ball rolled a long distance back toward the infield.
Trout used his superior speed to round the bases for an inside-the- park home run. Even though it only gave the Quakes a two-run lead, it was an energizing play that swung all the momentum back to the Quakes.
It's no surprise Rancho Cucamonga cruised for the rest of the game. In the seventh, Dillon Baird hit a two-run homer and Richard Cates later added a solo shot to make it 10-5.
With none on and two out in the ninth, the Quakes collected three straight hits to score two more runs and finish the scoring.
After overcoming one large deficit, the Mavs ran out of steam in the second half of the game. They did not have a man reach base after the fifth, as three Quakes relievers combined to retire the last 13 batters of the game.
Taking over for starter Manny Flores in the fourth, Christian Scholl (1-0) stabilized things on the mound for the Quakes, allowing one run over 2.2 innings.
Despite performing extremely well against the Quakes throughout the regular season, Kenn Kasparek faltered when it mattered the most. Kasparek (0-1) seemingly couldn't recover after that fateful wild pitch, exiting after allowing six runs in only three innings.
The Mavs suffered a huge blow with the loss and must win each of the next two nights to keep their season alive. The series will head to Rancho Cucamonga Thursday night, starting at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
