Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Adelanto, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series against the High Desert Mavericks, hitting five home runs in a 12-5 win on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.
Five different Quakes hit a home run, including Mike Trout's inside-the-park homer, the first by any Quakes' player this year.
Rancho Cucamonga wasted little time getting on the board, as Alberto Rosario ripped a solo home run two batters into the game, giving the Quakes a 1-0 advantage.
In the third, the Quakes got a huge break and were able to take a big lead. With runners at second and third and two outs, High Desert starter Kenn Kasparek (0-1) struck out Gabe Jacobo on a pitch in the dirt, for what should have been the final out of the inning. But the ball bounced in the dirt and went to the backstop, as Jacobo reached safely to extend the inning. On the play, Darwin Perez scored from third to make it 2-0. After a walk to Dillon Baird loaded the bases, Angel Castillo unloaded a grand slam to center field, making it a 6-0 game.
The Mavs battled back though, scoring four in the bottom of the third to make it a two-run game. Johermyn Chavez's three-run double off Quakes' starter Manny Flores highlighted the inning.
In the fifth, Quakes' reliever and eventual winner Christian Scholl (1-0) gave up a monster home run to Chavez, as his blast to left-center made pulled the Mavs to within a run at 6-5.
It was all Quakes from there though, as the Rancho Cucamonga bullpen didn't allow a base-runner over the final four innings, giving the offense another chance to get going.
Trout ripped a shot off the center field fence with two outs in the sixth. The ball bounced away from center fielder Denny Almonte and Trout circled the bases and slid in ahead of the throw for the first inside-the-park homer of his career, putting the Quakes up 7-5.
Baird struck for a two-run bomb in the seventh, while Richard Cates ripped a solo shot just two batters later, as the Quakes took a 10-5 lead against Mavs' reliever Blake Nation.
Jon Townsend and Perez had RBI hits in the ninth, as they capped the scoring against Mavs' reliever Cheyne Hann at 12-5.
The Quakes' bullpen was incredible on Wednesday, allowing just one run on two hits over 5 2/3 innings. Nick Pugliese and Eddie McKiernan combined to work three perfect innings, after Scholl finished the sixth.
With the win, the Quakes lead the best-of-three, 1-, and have a chance to sweep the series at The Epicenter on Thursday night. Orangel 0 Arenas (7-3) takes on High Desert's Jon Hesketh (3-4) in game two on Thursday night at 7:05pm.
