LAST GAME vs. OKLAHOMA CITY
Quad City Steamwheelers @ Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz
April 23, 2005
Ford Center
Steamwheelers 61, Yard Dawgz 43
OKLAHOMA CITY â The Quad City Steamwheelers picked up their second straight win of the season with a 61-43 road win over Oklahoma City. The 8,544 fans that showed up to the Ford Center for the first-ever meeting between the two teams got to see Sam Clemons throw for 327 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Steamwheelers to their first road win of the season. Matt Forbes, the reigning ADT Defensive Player of the Week, set himself up to win the award again as he sealed the victory with a pair of interception returns for touchdowns late in the fourth quarter. The Steamwheelers record now stands at 2-1, moving them into a second place tie with Amarillo in the Midwest Division.
Jeff Hewitt had his first three touchdowns of the season while Travis Burns and Jack Walker, Jr. each had two to pace the Steamwheeler offense that produced its biggest scoring output of the 2005 season.
The Steamwheelers' strong first half play continued against the Yard Dawgz as they got into the end zone on four of their five possessions in the opening 30 minutes to take a 27-18 lead at the break. Jack Walker, Jr., who had his first two touchdowns in a Steamwheeler uniform last weekend against Bossier/Shreveport, had two more while Burns and Hewitt each added a score to give the Steamwheelers the early lead.
The Yard Dawgz were able to keep the score close behind the combination of Craig Strickland and Jarrail Jackson. Strickland, who entered the game as the af2's top passer, found Jackson eight times for 104 yards and three scores in the first half for all 18 of the Yard Dawgz points.
Oklahoma City would twice pull in front in the second half, first at 31-27 and then at 37-34 before the Steamwheelers grabbed the lead for good. With 9:14 left in the fourth quarter, Clemons hit Burns with a five-yard strike to put Quad City up 41-37. Exactly three minutes later the lead was stretched to 11 points as Matt Forbes picked off a Strickland pass and took it 39 yards for a touchdown, making the score 48-37.
Hewitt and the Yard Dawgz Brandon Daniels would trade touchdowns late in the quarter before Forbes killed off any chance of an Oklahoma City comeback with his second return for a touchdown on the night. Forbes picked off a Strickland pass three yards deep in his own end zone and went the distance for the game's final score, putting the âWheelers in front 61-43. Forbes now has a league-best five interceptions on the season and four in the last two games. This was the third multi-interception of Forbes' af2 career and second in as many weeks while the 53-yard return for the final score sets a new Steamwheeler record for the longest interception return in franchise history.

LAST GAME RESET
Quad City Steamwheelers at Green Bay Blizzard
May 21, 2005
The Resch Center
Blizzard 56, Steamwheelers 49
GREEN BAY, Wis. â The Quad City Steamwheelers were unable to overcome five turnovers and were handed their third consecutive defeat, falling 56-49 to the Green Bay Blizzard in front of 3,027 fans at The Retsch Center. Travis Burns had three touchdowns, two receiving and one rushing, while Jack Walker, Jr. added a pair of scores for the fifth time in the last six games. But it was not enough to overcome a pair of interceptions, and three lost fumbles, all of which occurred in the red zone, as the Blizzard turned those five turnovers into 28 points to tally their fifth straight win on the year, and the first over Quad City in team history.
Despite the season-high in turnovers, the âWheelers were still in a position to win the game in the final minute. They had the ball and a one-point lead, in Green Bay territory, only for the Blizzard defense to stop Burns a yard shy of the first down marker on a fourth-and-ten, giving them the ball back with 31 seconds to go. Three consecutive incompletions brought up a fourth-and-ten of its own for Green Bay, but while Quad City was stopped, the Blizzard would not be, picking up a first down to extend a drive that culminated with Johnny Turman finding Robert Garth in the back of the end zone with 14 seconds left. Matt Huebner, who had two rushing scores on the day, added the two-point conversion to give Green Bay a 56-49 lead that it would not relinquish.
The Blizzard appeared to take control of the game in the second quarter when they scored 21 consecutive points to grab a 28-14 lead. The âWheelers turned the ball over on each of their first three possessions of the quarter, but were able to cut the deficit to seven right before the intermission. Following Matt Forbes' sixth interception of the season, Sam Clemons found Burns for an 11-yard strike to make the score 28-21 at the half.
Heubner doubled the Green Bay lead to 14 points early in the third, but Quad City was able to even the score with a pair of touchdowns less than three minutes apart midway through. Clemons and Burns hooked up for a 36-yard strike on a fourth-and-short to get back to a one possession game. That was followed by a Nick Gatto onside kick which was recovered by Pat Hughes, giving the Steamwheelers a chance to pull even. They would do just that as Clemons hit Walker, Jr. for a 16-yard score, leveling the score 35-35, and setting up the dramatic fourth quarter.
Garth and Walker, Jr. traded scores early in the quarter, giving Quad City a 42-41 lead as Green Bay kicker Henrick Juul-Nielsen missed his extra point attempt while Gatto did not. Troy Mason put the Blizzard ahead with 9:28 to go, only for the Steamwheelers to pull back in front with 2:46 left thanks to Jeff Hewitt's first touchdown grab. Each defense then earned a stop, giving the ball back to the Blizzard for what would prove to be the game-winning score.

MISCALLANEOUS TEAM NOTES
Matching a Bad Mark: Following their 56-49 loss in Green Bay on Saturday night, the Steamwheelers are now embroiled in the third three-game losing streak in franchise history. The first of the three began on May 25, 2002 with a 57-38 loss in Wichita, and was followed by home defeats to Peoria and Tennessee Valley. Last year Quad City was 6-1 when it traveled to San Diego, only to be upset 62-52 by the Riptide. That defeat was followed by a one-point loss in Louisville and then a seven-point defeat at home against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
On each of the previous occasions, the âWheelers snapped their losing streaks with a tough road win, but with two consecutive home games on the schedule, they will be looking to alter that trend this weekend and avoid the franchise's first ever four-game losing streak.
Looking to Start Over Again: With the loss to Green Bay, the Steamwheelers are now below .500 at the latest point of the year in franchise history. The only other time that the âWheelers had ever been below .500 was in 2003 when they started the season with a 0-2 mark. That year, Quad City proceeded to run off 14 consecutive wins to finish the regular season 14-2.
All-time, the âWheelers have a 3-1 record when playing with a sub-.500 record.
Duo for Triple-Digits: For the first time this season, the Steamwheelers had multiple receivers eclipse the 100-yard mark as Tim Dodge caught eight balls for a game-high 113 yards and Travis Burns added eight catches for 101 and two scores. It was the second time that each Dodge and Burns, who rank one-two on the team respectively in receiving yards on the season, had gone over the century mark this year.
In 2004, the âWheelers had multiple receivers eclipse the 100-yard plateau in the same game four times. Dodge and Jeff Hewitt each had more than 100 yards in the season opener against Manchester, the Week 8 loss in San Diego, the Week 11 win in Green Bay and the regular season finale against Louisville.
Forbes Moves One Pick Closer: With his second quarter interception of Johnny Turman, Matt Forbes is now tied for second in the af2 with six interceptions on the season. He is also in second place on the team's all-time interceptions list with 17 during his three year with Quad City. The only player with more picks as a member of the âWheelers is Clarence Thompson who tallied 20 interceptions, during the first two years of af2.
Still Streakin': Since joining the Steamwheelers at the start of the 2003 season Wide Receiver/Defensive Back, Tim Dodge, has recorded at least one reception in all 41 games of his af2 career, including the postseason. Dodge has totaled 234 receptions, for 3,559 yards, in his career for an average of 5.7 catches per game. This year alone he has 44 receptions, good for second on the team, in just seven games. Jeff Hewitt also has a consecutive games with a reception streak that stands at 32 games dating back to May 31, 2002 in Cincinnati against the Swarm.
May, May Go Away: The Steamwheelers have had a month to forget here in May, going 0-3 while seeing a chance of victory snatched away from them in the final minute of all three games. On Saturday, the âWheelers will be looking to get back into the winning column against Oklahoma City and avoid a triumvirate of downbeat distinctions.
No Quad City team has ever lost four straight games in a season, suffered through a winless month or lost four games in any given month, but all of those merits could fall if Rick Frazier's men cannot pull out a victory over the Yard Dawgz.
The only other time that the âWheelers lost three games in a calendar month was in June 2002 when they fell to Peoria, Tennessee Valley and Bossier City. However, they avoided a winless month that time by defeating Memphis and Tennessee Valley in back-to-back games before the month ending defeat to the Battle Wings.
Second Time Around: This will be the last of two meetings on the year against the Yard Dawgz. It is also the second of seven season, home-and-home series that the Steamwheelers will complete. Of those seven series, the âWheelers have played the first leg in six of them, compiling a 3-3 record, compared to an 0-1 mark, thanks to a 63-55 loss to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at home two weeks ago, the second time around.
Last year the âWheelers played six different teams twice, going 4-2 the first time through and 3-3 during the return legs.
TALE OF THE TAPE: The Steamwheelers slipped to 12th in the latest Weekly Coaches poll with 52 points while the Yard Dawgz jumped back into the poll at No. 11 with 56 points. Here is a complete look at the statistical breakdown of the two teams. (All stats as of 5/26/05)
