Schubert, a Manchester native who currently serves as Senior Vice President of UBS Financial Services and is one of nine local owners of the Wolves, was a valuable reference for Lambert and her piece.

Schubert is a former local football star that made it to the big time, playing six years in the NFL as a wide receiver for the Patriots and Chicago Bears. After starring at Manchester Central High, he went on to earn his degree at the University of Massachusetts. While at UMass, Schubert played a starring role on the Minutemen football team, earning All-America honors for his stellar senior season of 1972.

Despite being 25 years removed from his playing days in the NFL, the spirited Schubert found the perfect outlet for his competitive nature with the Wolves.

"At 28, I loved playing," Schubert commented to Forbes. "At 54, I like owning better."

The No. 3-ranked Wolves enter this Friday night's road game at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in a first-place tie in the East Division on the strength of a six-game winning streak. The Pioneers are currently tied for second place in the East Division with a 4-3 record. W-B/Scranton is a very talented team that boasts one of the highest-scoring offenses in the league. QB Kyle Rowley and OS J.R. Thomas spearhead the attack, which averages over 54 points per game (54.3). Manchester will counter with a strong defensive unit, led by top-flight defensive specialists William "Roc" Haith and Allistair Sebastien. Haith leads the league in tackles with 57.0 and is among the top-5 in passes defended with 14. Sebastien is currently tied for second in the af2 in interceptions (6) and ranks fourth in tackles (47.0). On offense, the Wolves are directed by their heady, steady QB Jake Eaton. The efficient Eaton currently leads the league in completion percentage (1st – 71.9) and passer rating (1st – 114.1), while also ranking among the af2's best in passing touchdowns (T-3rd – 36) and passing yards (9th – 1,708). His favorite target is WR/LB J.J. McKelvey. McKelvey, a big, physical receiver, currently leads the league in receptions with 61. The former Clemson standout also ranks among the af2's elite in scoring with 104 points on 17 touchdowns and one 2-pt conversion.
