Last Week's Games
Wednesday, January 24th - Chicago 5 at Quad City 4
The Mallards dropped a 5-4 decision to the Chicago Hounds on Wednesday night at The MARK. Blake Stewart, Justin Chwedoruk, Don Parsons and Luke Stauffacher scored in the loss. In the first period, the teams traded goals as Maris Ziedins scored to give the Hounds a 1-0 lead at 3:24 of the opening frame. Blake Stewart scored Quad City's first goal as he swatted the puck past Chicago's Marty Magers while falling to the ice. The goal was Stewart's fourth tally of the year and tied the game at one. In the second, B.J. Radovich and Maris Ziedins scored to open up a two-goal lead for the Hounds at 3-1. At the midway point of the period, the Mallards scored twice in a span of 20 seconds to tie the game at three. Justin Chwedoruk netted his 13th goal of the year at 10:02 of the period before Don Parsons added his league-leading 30th tally of the year at 10:22. Parsons is the first UHL player this year to reach the 30-goal plateau. Before the second closed, Rod Aldoff scored shorthanded after taking a Mallard turnover and deking past Zach Sikich to give Chicago a 4-3 lead after two periods. In the third, Matt Amado netted an insurance goal to give the Hounds a 5-3 edge. The insurance tally would prove essential as Luke Stauffacher scored his 19th goal of the year with just 4:34 remaining in the game. Despite a late charge, the Mallards could not score the equalizer as Magers made 13 third period saves to earn his 13th win in the Hounds net.
Friday, January 26th - Rockford 4 at Quad City 3
The Mallards dropped an exciting one-goal decision to Rockford on Friday at The MARK. Sean Starke, Luke Stauffacher and Chad Woollard scored for Quad City in the loss. Starke netted the first period's only goal as he extended his scoring streak to three games. Starke had four points (two goals and two assists) during the streak. In the second, Luke Stauffacher scored on a shorthanded breakaway to give Quad City a 2-0 lead. The Hogs stormed back to score three unanswered goals to claim the lead. Preston Mizzi started the barrage at 2:35 of the middle period to cut the Mallards lead in half. The Rockford captain then tied the game at two at the 11:04 mark. Jason Notermann followed three and a half minutes later to give his team a 3-2 lead. Chad Woollard tied the game at three when he scored his 20th goal of the year with 2:59 left in the second. Kevin Ulanski scored the only goal of the third period when he ripped a shorthanded shot into the Mallards net for the deciding tally.
Saturday, January 27th - Quad City 1 at Port Huron 0
Travis Granbois netted his first professional goal on Saturday as the Mallards earned a 1-0 win over Port Huron. Jason Tapp made 18 saves in the win to earn his second shutout in the last eight days. The Mallards outshot the Flags 25-12 through two scoreless periods. In the third, the teams skated scoreless for 16:25 before Travis Granbois recorded his first professional goal and first professional point to give the Mallards a 1-0 lead. Mallards netminder Jason Tapp made Granbois' tally stand up as he made six third period saves.
Sunday, January 28th - Quad City 2 at Chicago 3
The Mallards dropped a 3-2 decision to Chicago on Sunday at The Sears Centre. Brett Pilkington and Luke Stauffacher scored in the loss. The lone marker of the first period was scored by former Mallard Drew Otten. Otten fired a shot from left wing into the Mallards net to stake the Hounds to a 1-0 lead. In the second, Todd Grant scored for Chicago during a 5-on-3 power-play. Grant's ninth goal of the year extended the Hounds lead to 2-0. Brett Pilkington put the Mallards on the board with a power-play tally with 2.8 seconds remaining in the middle period. The Mallards charged out of the gate in the third and tested Chicago's Brenden Cuthbert several times. The Hounds netminder withstood the charge before B.J. Radovich netted an insurance goal for Chicago with 8:40 left in the contest. Luke Stauffacher pulled the Mallards to within one with a late power-play goal. The scrappy forward scored his 21st goal of the year with 39.8 seconds left in the game, but the Mallards could pull no closer as the team fell to 19-19-5 on the season.
Player of the Week
Luke Stauffacher is the Mallards nominee for UHL Player of the Week. He scored a goal and added 17 penalty minutes in the Mallards loss to Chicago on Wednesday night.
