Generals and Komets continue streaks
January 29, 2007 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release
LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO --- The Flint Generals have continued their recent winning ways by gaining three more wins in United Hockey League (UHL) action to extend their streak to six straight wins. The Fort Wayne Komets have also put together a winning stretch by claiming five consecutive victories.
The Generals are averaging five goals per game during their six-game run. Defensively, they have allowed just 14 goals over the same span for an average of 2.33 per game. Flint has won their last four games on home ice, but will now hit the road for their next five contests.
The Komets have found the right combination of defense and offense during their recent five-game success as they have outscored the opposition 22-8. Special teams have played a key role in their offensive output. The Komets have converted on 11 of 34 (32.4%) power play opportunities during the five-game win streak. Fort Wayne continues to lead the UHL in home power play percentage (26.4%) and overall power play (21.9%).
HATS OFF - Kalamazoo Wings rookie Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn scored three goals in the third period of Friday's 9-3 victory to register the first "hat trick" (3g) of his professional career. Prior to the game, he had scored just four goals this season. His night was not complete as he accomplished the "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" by recording a goal, an assist, and a fighting major all in one contest.
Muskegon Fury left wing Mike Watt also recorded a "hat trick" in the third period of Sunday's 6-4 win vs. Elmira. He scored his goals three different ways as his first goal was unassisted followed by a power play goal 45 seconds later and a shorthanded goal just over seven minutes after that.
MASKED MEN - Fort Wayne goaltender Kevin St. Pierre extended his league all-time record when he registered the 25th shutout of his UHL career on Friday. He stopped all 25 shots in the 3-0 win vs. Chicago. He was not the only netminder to blank his opponents during the week. Quad City's Jason Tapp stopped all 18 shots in the 1-0 win vs. Port Huron on Saturday. It was the second shutout this season for Tapp who sits just one shutout shy of moving into a tie for second place on the UHL all-time shutout list. Joe Dimaline, who won championships with Muskegon and Quad City, currently sits in second place behind St. Pierre with 15 career UHL shutouts.
LITTLEJOHN JOINS UHL 200 CLUB - Elmira Jackals right wing Frank Littlejohn became just the 20th player to reach 200 goals in his UHL career. He netted a shorthanded goal in the third period of Friday's loss to Kalamazoo to reach the 200 mark. Littlejohn scored a shorthand goal again the following night and now leads the league with seven shorthanded tallies this season.
AMERICAN MADE - Quad City Mallards forward Don Parsons is closing in on a major milestone. He is seven goals shy of tying Joe Mullen as the all-time leader in professional goals scored among American-born players. Parsons (Boston, MA) currently ranks second in the UHL with 30 goals this season. He has netted 615 in his 15-year pro career. Mullen (New York, NY) scored 502 goals during his career in the National Hockey League (NHL) and an additional 120 goals in three seasons in the minor leagues.
FAN SUPPORT - The Bloomington PrairieThunder played in front of their largest crowd of the season when 5,488 fans packed the US Cellular Coliseum on Saturday night to watch the club take on the Chicago Hounds. The Port Huron Flags also hosted their largest crowd of the season when 2,529 fans filled McMorran Arena on Saturday to watch the Flags play the Quad City Mallards. Unfortunately the overwhelming fan support was not enough to help the home clubs gain a win as both the PrairieThunder and Flags suffered one-goal losses.
FAMILY STRIPES - UHL referee Jim Hawthorne was joined on the ice by his son, Tyler, for back-to-back contests during the weekend. Tyler, a first-year UHL linesman, teamed up with his father for Saturday's match-up between the Elmira Jackals and Kalamazoo Wings. The Hawthorne's were also a part of the crew for Sunday's game between the Elmira Jackals and Muskegon Fury. The father and son combination previously worked a game together this season becoming only the second father-son on-ice official combination to work in a professional game together.
