MISSOULA, MONT - Danny Pulfer was hitless in his first 15 at-bats as a member of the Missoula Osprey. But when the first one fell in for the veteran second baseman, the floodgates opened on Wednesday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.
Pulfer hit for the cycle, becoming only the second Osprey player to pull off the feat, and drove in six runs to lead Missoula rolled to a 20-0 win over the Helena Brewers in front of 2,426 fans.
The Osprey wasted no time in scoring runs off of Helena starter Tyler Wagner (0-1), scoring seven times in the bottom of the first inning. Ironically, Pulfer batted twice in that inning and was retired each time. That drought would end in the bottom of the third inning, when Pulfer hit a sinking liner to right field. Helena right fielder Michael Reed dove to try and make a catch, but it eluded him and rolled to the wall. Pulfer was credited with a RBI triple.
Pulfer added a single in the fifth, then homered with a man on in the bottom of the sixth, and capped the night with a bases-loaded double to center that chased home all three runners in the bottom of the seventh inning, capping the scoring and allowing Pulfer to join Jimmy Principe (2007) as the only Osprey players to hit for the cycle in a game. Pulfer also became the fifth Osprey player, and the first since Paul Goldschmidt did it in 2009, to drive in six runs in a game.
Every Osprey started had at least one base hit and scored at least one run, as the Osprey pounded out 20 hits against six different Brewers pitchers. Michael Perez just missed hitting for the cycle himself, falling a double shy, and drove in five runs for Missoula, while John Leonard added three hits. Tyler Bream and Socrates Brito chipped in with two-hit nights.
Lost in the offense was the stellar pitching, as three Osprey pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout. Jared Ray (1-0) did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, and he combined with Mike Blake and Chris Capper to collect 12 strikeouts.
The Osprey and Brewers continue their three-game series at Ogren Park Allegiance Field on Thursday at 7:05. Right-hander Ross Gederman will get the start for Missoula, while Helena will counter with left-hander Will West.
Tickets are available now at the MSO Hub Box Office, located at 140 North Higgins in Downtown Missoula, online at MissoulaOsprey.com and by phone (406) 543-3300.
