Danville Otterbots News Release
Pulaski, VA. - It is safe to say that this isn't the start to the season the D-Braves were hoping for when they left town on Tuesday morning. The Mariners scored in five straight innings on Thursday night to beat the Braves 13-3 and complete the sweep in the opening series for both teams. The D-Braves hit the ball well tonight but again failed to hit in the clutch. Leaving runners in scoring position has been a consistent issue in all three games thus far.
The Braves picked up right where they left off the night before. In the first two innings of tonight's game Danville had runners on second and third with just one out. The Pulaski starter, right handed Luke Taylor (1-0), was able to squeeze out of the jam both times by forcing Braves hitters to strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
D-Braves hurler, David Filak's (0-1) efforts did not yield the same results. He allowed one run to score in the bottom of the second inning, but then allowed three runs a piece in the third and fourth innings. He did not help himself out in bottom of the third when he fielded a bunt off of Bryan Brito's bat. Filak threw the ball past first and it went down the first baseline into the corner. Two runs would score because of the throwing error. The end of the fourth inning would also mark the end of Filak's night; he gave up seven runs, five of them earned, on eight hits while striking out just one.
The Braves put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Kyle Kubitza doubled following Nick Ahmed's single, but unfortunately Kubitza was caught trying to stretch the double into a triple. That was followed by a William Beckwith double and he would later score on Sam Munson's single to the left side of the infield.
Guillermo Ignacio relieved Filak to start the fifth inning and would go four batters without recording an out. Those four batters would notch three more runs for the Mariners making the score 10-2. The Mariners were not ready to stop there though. They would score three more runs off of Jonathan Burns in the sixth.
The D-Braves posted double digits in the left on base category for the second straight night. After stranding 11 on base Wednesday, they stranded another 12 on Thursday night. The Braves went just 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position. "The boys hit the ball real hard tonight. They hit the ball very well in the middle innings, but when it came to driving the runners in, they hit the ball sharply at fielders," Randy Ingle said.
Danville first baseman, Edison Sanchez had to leave the game in the bottom of the third inning. A ball hit by Jamal Austin, hit the heel of Sanchez's glove and came up and Sanchez in the eye. Ryan Delgado took over the first baseman's duties.
The Braves travel to Bluefield to start at three game series next. The first game is tomorrow night at 7 pm at Bowen Field. The Bluefield Blue Jays are in their first year as a Toronto affiliate. They had been a part of the Baltimore organization for 52 straight years prior to 2011. The Danville Braves will open up their home season on Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m. when they take on the Princeton Rays. The first 1,000 fans at the game will receive a 2011 magnet schedule.
