Danville Otterbots News Release
Pulaski, VA.- The Danville Braves played great. The Pulaski Mariners played slightly better. It was a pitcher's duel tonight in front of a Pulaski crowd of 867. Both teams combined for just one run on eight hits in a game that lasted just two hours and fourteen minutes.
Danville pitcher, Lucas LaPoint (0-1), had a perfect game going into the fifth inning. Guillermo Pimentel, who is ranked as the fifth best prospect in the Mariners system by Baseball America, took the first pitch of the fifth to left field for his first hit of the season. The next batter, Daniel Paolini, hit a line drive double to right field that scored Pimentel. Pimentel's run would be the game winner and only run of the game for either squad. LaPoint, a Palmdale, California native, would end up tossing six solid innings giving up just four hits, one earned run, while striking out five on the night. He struck out the side in the second inning and then induced six straight groundouts in innings three and four.
"Both teams played very well, it was a great ball game. The pitchers were outstanding. They just put together two doubles back to back, that's all it was," said D-Braves skipper, Randle Ingle.
Even though LaPoint suffered the loss, he outlasted his counterpart. Mayckol Guaipe (1-0) lasted five and two-thirds, giving up the three Danville hits, walking three, and striking out four. Leonardo Rodriguez came in to relieve Guaipe in the top of the sixth when Danville had first and second with two outs. The D-Braves would ultimately strand those runners on an Elmer Reyes pop out to first.
Danville threatened more than once throughout the game. Their big opportunity came in the bottom of the second inning when Guaipe beaned Larsson, Query, and Reyes consecutively. With no outs and the bases loaded, Danville center fielder, Kurt Fleming, hit a bullet to first base that was snagged by Patrick Brady. Brady then stepped on first to double off Reyes who was caught making a move towards second. Tony Mueller would end the inning on a fly out to right field.
The Braves loaded the bases one more in the top of the eighth with two down. The Mariners brought in Angel Raga who got pinch hitter, Kyle Kubitza, to groundout. Angel Raga earned himself a save after closing out the ninth inning. Danville pitcher, Gus Schlosser, the 17th round selection in this June's draft, got his first professional innings in. He pitched two scoreless innings giving up one hit, one walk, and striking out four.
The D-Braves stranded 11 men on base tonight, going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. In two games, the D-Braves have now left 18 on base, and have gone 0-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
The final game of the three game set continues tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Righty David Filak (0-0) will pitch for Danville, and the Mariners will throw Luke Taylor (0-0) who is also righthanded. The Danville Braves will open up their home season on Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m. when they take on the Princeton Rays. The first 1,000 fans at the game will receive a 2011 magnet schedule.
