Birmingham, MI - The holidays are over and a new year brings exciting basketball to Detroit. The Detroit Panthers, under the Premier Basketball League (PBL), made their debut, Monday, December 29, 2008, at Peabody's Restaurant in Birmingham. The team had their first official public appearance, a media meet and greet, before their opening game on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at Wylie E. Grooves High School on 20500 W. 13 Mile Road, Beverly Hills, MI with tip-off at 6:00 p.m. and ticket price $10. Local television station, WADL, will broadcast highlights of all Panthers' home games.
The team holds strong talented players from around the state and country. "We have supreme athletes, who are well conditioned and eager to begin the season," stated Bill Jones, head coach and assistant general manager. Veterans on the team possess tough leadership ability and superb ball handling skills. Players like Stane's Bufford, C. Corey Gupton, Kyle Johnson, Tyrone Mack, Willie Mitchell, Dave Myers (team captain), Reggie Riley, and Brian Woodland have played professionally in various leagues in the United States and overseas. Rookie players, Giovanni Riley, Jasen Hunt, and Micah Kirsten, have superb high school and collegiate records and are fervid to make a name in professional basketball.
The Panthers are prepared to provide basketball fans with an excellent game that includes plenty of slam dunks, 3-point shooting, hard defensive plays, and energetic offensive moves. Games are also family and community friendly. "Our games are organized and priced so that families can come out, enjoy a high quality game, fun half-time activities, and not feel an emptiness in their pockets," said Kevin Carter, owner and general manager. The home opening game half-time show will include Detroit's Spain Middle School drumline and cheer team.
