Providence Bruins News Release
Springfield, MA - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Thunderbirds tonight 4-1, salvaging a split of the team's weekend home-and-home series. The team has now won six straight on the road, the longest streak in the AHL this year. Providence got goals from Jake DeBrusk, Wayne Simpson, Colby Cave and Tommy Cross while Anton Khudobin earned his first start in net since being sent down to Providence Friday.
The P-Bruins jumped out to a quick 1-0 at 7:19 while on the power play. Cross took a slap shot from the right point that DeBrusk tipped in to extend his point streak up to eight straight, the most by a P-Bruin this year. Alex Grant got the secondary assist on DeBrusk's 10th goal of the season. Springfield tied the score with just 19 seconds left in the period, taking advantage of a delayed penalty. Mackenzie Weegar sent a cross ice pass to Brent Regner who one-timed a shot on Khudobin. Juho Lammikko jumped on the loose puck and scored to tie the score 1-1 entering the first intermission.
Providence regained the lead 6:20 into the second period. Sean Kuraly sent a pass across the crease to Peter Cehlarik that Cehlarik was able to sneak to Simpson. He tapped the puck in for his 11th goal of the season as Providence grabbed a 2-1 lead. With 37 seconds left in the period, Cave scored on the power play to push the Bruin lead to two. Alex Grant made a beautiful backhand pass to Cave who just had to tap the puck into the open net, giving him his seventh goal of the season. Cross added an empty net goal in the third as Providence went on to win this one 4-1.
Khudobin stopped 18 of 19 shots while Reto Berra stopped 25 of 28. Providence was 2-6 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill. The team finishes off their three-game weekend tomorrow afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center for a home game against Bridgeport at 3:05 pm.
