Propelled by 6th Inning Rally, Blowfish Top Generals
June 15, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Lexington County, S.C. (June 15, 2015) - Up until the sixth inning, the Lexington County Blowfish tallied one hit. The floodgates opened while down 3-0, as they rode the wave of a five-run sixth inning to rally to a 5-3 victory over the Petersburg Generals on Monday night.
Sly Edwards (Charleston Southern) and Jared Williams (University of South Carolina) were hit by pitches to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) brought Edwards home with an RBI single. Crowe added to his team lead in hits (20) and RBI (14).
Connor Owings (Coastal Carolina) would do the most damage on what proved to be the key play in the inning.
Owings slapped a slow roller to the left side, a usual tailor-made double play ball. The throw to second scorched its way into the right field corner, dusting off the bases, scoring Williams, Crowe, and Howard Joe (Mercer), who walked to load the bases. Trevor Bradley (USC-Aiken) followed that up with an RBI single up the middle to cap the scoring.
It looked like Petersburg would take a stronghold on this game with their solid fifth inning. Four consecutive singles from Shamoy Christopher, Eric Crain, Brynn Martinez and Mitch Spires scored two runs for the Generals off of starter Taylor Widener (University of South Carolina). Widener had cruised up until that point, striking out six batters.
Widener continues to lead the Coastal Plain League with 33 punchouts.
Nick Jobst (USC-Aiken) took over on the mound for Widener, and induced a double play to end the sixth. He would eventually be credited with the win. Avery Greer (University of North Georgia) cleaned up the seventh inning in style, striking out the side, and allowing one base runner in the eighth before striking out one more.
Erik Davis (USC-Aiken) notched the save, taking over for Greer in the ninth inning, sitting the Generals down in order after a ground rule double allowed by Greer. It marked the second straight win for the Blowfish. They are now 3-3 in their last six games.
Up next for the Blowfish is a trip to Peninsula to take on the Pilots on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Catch all of the action on the live radio broadcast on Z93.1 FM The Lake, and on the Blowfish Baseball mobile app starting with the pregame show at 6:50 p.m.
