K-9 Battle Goes To IceDogs The IceDogs came up with a few tricks of their own on Sunday afternoon at the Hershey Centre. In doing so, they treated their hometown fans to a 7-3 win in a Halloween matinee. The opening period was arguably the most entertaining with both teams matching one-another in the intensity department and looking to complete successful weekends with a strong start. IceDog rookie Dustin Jeffrey scored his first OHL goal as he knocked home a Nathan Hooper rebound less than six minutes in. Mississauga almost made it 2-0 as a point shot from Brandon Elliott rang off the post behind the Sault's starting goalie Kyle Gajewski moments later. The Greyhounds quickly recovered with Chris Lawrence scoring his fourth of the season at 7:55, sliding a loose puck under a sprawled out Mississauga goaltender Michael Ouzas. On the heels of his first shutout in a 1-0 home victory over Belleville on Friday evening, Ouzas was making consecutive starts for the first time this season. Jeff Carter scored his fifth goal of the campaign just past the midway point of the game to give the Greyhounds their only lead of the day. Carter showed great patience in waiting for Ouzas to make his move then jammed the puck into the near side for a 2-1 lead. Ouzas was able to redeem himself seconds later, making a nice pad save off of Carter on a partial breakaway. Mississauga tied the score at 2-2 before the end of the period as Michael Swift scored his fourth of the season, converting a nice pass from Brett Connolly.
The second period was controlled by Mississauga with fatigue starting to set in for the visitors. Coming off of a hard-fought 3-3 tie in Sudbury on Friday evening and a 4-3 victory Saturday night in Barrie, the Greyhounds had difficulty keeping up with the game's pace. Brad Snetsinger's third of the season, followed by Kyle Quincey's fourth and Brett Connolly's first put the game out of reach for Sault Ste. Marie after 40 minutes. Connolly's goal was the nicest on the afternoon, and most likely a relief to him, as he launched a beautiful slap shot past Gajewski's high-glove side. That spelled the end of the day for the Greyhounds netminder as he was replaced by Jakub Cech with just over six minutes remaining in the period. The teams went to the dressing room with the score 5-2 Mississauga after two.
Patrick O'Sullivan continued his strong play of late scoring his 11th of the season 15:32 into the final period. He also had an assist on Snetsinger's goal earlier in the contest. Matt Puntureri scored at 16:51 of the 3rd on the power-play to bring the Sault within 6-3, but that's the closest they would get as Brett Connolly scored his second of the game less than a minute later to round out the scoring.
The IceDogs swept the three-star honours as Dustin Jeffrey (1st OHL goal) was named the third star, Michael Swift (one goal, one assist) was second star and Brett Connolly's two goals and one assist helped him take top spot.
The IceDogs will now host the Owen Sound Attack this Friday at the Hershey Centre. Game Time is set for 7:30pm. Good seats are still available and can be purchased through Ticketmaster or by visiting the Hershey Centre Box Office.
