Watertown Privateers News Release

One night after dropping a three-goal period in the third period to Danbury that led to a 6-5 overtime loss, the 1000 Islands Privateers found themselves down three entering the final stanza at New York. The Privateers battled back, but Aviator goalie Kevin Druce held off the resilient offense and the Aviators defeated the Privateers 4-3 in Federal Hockey League action before 505 at the Aviator Arena.

With starting goalie Josselin St. Pierre recuperating from a concussion, Richard Sillery got the start for the Privateers. Aviators' center Angelo Serse opened the game converting a rebound in front. Tyler Fernandez responded for the Privateers with an unassisted wrister over the shoulder, but Serse reclaimed the lead for New York and Andrew Scampoli extended the lead before the first period ended. The Privateers strong power play repeatedly tested Druce but he was up to the task. Christopher Holmes tallied the lone goal of the second as he exited the penalty box, streaked in untouched and beat Sillery for a shorthanded tally. The Privateers successfully killed off three penalties at the end of the second and beginning of the third periods. The New York defense played stout before Druce, blocking shots and harassing passers. Alex Goupil nailed his team-leading 26th goal of the season inside eight minutes to go in the game. Michael Byrd and James Kirkwood drew the helpers. Late mental mistakes set the Aviators down men, and Shawn Fensel rocketed a shot past Druce to cut the lead to one, as Goupil and Alex Lacombe earned the assists. Late rushes with an empty net proved fruitless and the Aviators took their fourth straight victory.

The Privateers will return to the Bonnie Castle Rec Center on Sunday to host the Rome Frenzy at 3 PM. Following the game will be the Privateers auction. Fans can bid on signed gear, game-used equipment, and unique fan experiences with proceeds benefiting the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Northern New York. The 1000 Islands Privateers operate in Alexandria Bay and are a founding franchise in the Federal Hockey League. The Privateers play at the Bonnie Castle Recreation Center in Alexandria Bay. "The future is now" in the Federal Hockey League as the top talent play professional hockey with a chance to advance their careers.
