History is Made as First Female to Coach in Men's Pro Game Wins Game

Tonight served as a first in hockey history as President/ Owner, Nicole Kirnan took over reigns as Head Coach. The Privateers announced this move last week as current head coach, Paul Kelly moved to the position of player-coach two weeks ago. During his first shift, half a minute into the game, Kelly affirmed the decision for the fans as he lit the lamp in front of a full crowd at the Watertown Arena. The team rallied around the unprecedented crowd and opportunity as Kelly netted his second, from Max Mobley and Kris McCarthy. Danbury answered in the third when Mike Atkinson scored the team's only goal. Atkinson scored 13:11 into the third period to make the score 2-1 1000 Islands. Richard Vanderhoek provided the assist. In one of the year's most selfless plays, Cory Belile passed off to Adam McAllister as seconds ticked off the clock to secure a 3-1 victory at home for the Privateers.

1000 Islands netminder Matt Anthony proved he is one of the league's standout goaltenders, stopping 29 shots during the victory. Mike Brown recorded 24 saves for the Whalers. The two teams face off again tomorrow at the Watertown Arena at 7:35 in a preview of the Eastern division of the FHL playoffs. The 1000 Islands Privateers are members of the Federal Hockey League. The FHL is an 'A' level professional hockey league whose mission includes providing affordable family friendly entertainment. In the first three seasons, the FHL has advanced the careers of hundreds of players to higher levels of professional hockey.
