Dayton Sticks Together as a Team in Victory Over the Dashers

By Robert Kirchner

(Dayton, Ohio) Last night the Dayton Demonz and Danville Dashers played a game with many momentum swings that developed into a wide open game; and the Demonz taking a 1-0 series lead. No lead was ever safe, as the two teams battled back and forth, with the Demonz pulling out a 7-5 win.

The objective for tonight's game was for Danville to leave Dayton with a win, and take home ice advantage away from the Demonz. Dayton's goal was to win tonight's game, and take a 2-0 lead in the series, to put the Dashers on their heels, with the Dashers having to win the next 3 games of the series.

The Demonz through disciplined team play and hard work won this evening's game 5 - 1 and are headed to Danville with a 2-0 series lead. The unfortunate event was a game that got out of control, with 70 minutes in penalties and 26 offenses. Sadly, this situation could have been prevented.

Danville made a change in net for tonight's game, replacing last night's starter Justin Sand with Peter Dundovich a native of Philadelphia.

Danville came out hitting at every opportunity right off the opening face-off, in an effort to take the most explosive scoring team in the Federal Hockey League off their game. However, the Demonz can play a skating game along with a physical game when pushed.

The chippy first period saw 9 penalties called between both teams, 2 of which were match penalties for roughing.

The period would end with neither team scoring. Lucas Schott probably had the best chance on a breakaway opportunity. He was able to pick off a breakout pass at the Danville blue line and go in alone on Dundovich.

Play in the 2nd period continued to be physical. Danville's physicality became a deterrent to them as became undisciplined with their aggressive style of play. Danville would receive 4 penalties to Dayton's 1 penalty. The Demonz capitalized on 2 of their 4 power play opportunities.

At 7:09 Jason Hill's power play goal gave Dayton a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later Chris Leveille added another power play goal, putting the Demonz on top 2-0.

Dayton's 3rd goal came at even strength, with Chris Leveille and Jason Hill breaking into the Dasher's zone with a 2 on 1 rush. Leveille hit Hill with a beautiful backhand pass, and Hill tapped it into the net at 17:19. This 3rd goal by Hill gave him the Hat Trick for the evening.

Dayton's team play put the game out of reach early in the final period. Scoring off another rush as Leveille set-up Luke Flicek in the slot, to give the Demonz a 4-0 lead, at 3:53. Minutes later Dayton would make it 5-0 on Nick Petriello's tally.

After Dayton scored their 5th goal, Danville began to take exception to Demonz players, realizing they were out of the game, frustration began to set in. The rest of the game continued to be played unfortunately very chippy, with the score and the game out of reach for the Dashers.

Danville was able to get on the score sheet with 12 seconds left in the game to make it final 5-1. Jonathan Juliano of the Dashers was credited with the power play goal.

Dayton and Danville continue their series next week, on Friday, March 8th at Danville.
