
PrairieThunder falls; Parsons sets record

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Flint scored five goals in the third period, including three in the first eight minutes, to rally past the Bloomington PrairieThunder, 7-4, Saturday night in International Hockey League action at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
The crowd of 2,718 people saw Bloomington's Don Parsons set the all-time record for career goals scored in professional minor league hockey. Parsons scored two goals to run his 17-year career total to 678 and surpass Kevin Kerr as the all-time leader.
The PrairieThunder enjoyed a 4-2 lead heading into the third period when the meltdown occurred.
John DiPace scored 19 seconds into the period and a Steve Rymsha assist and Josef Fojtik added the game-tying goal 4:10 seconds later off assists from Jan Jas and Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn.
Flint then took the lead for good at 5-4 with 7:12 left on an unassisted Jas goal. Rymsha added a short-handed empty net goal off an assist by Greg Bullock with 1:56 remaining. Joel Gasper scored another short-handed goal for Flint 37 seconds later on an assist by Jas.
Bullock gave Flint an early 1-0 advantage 4:47 into the game on a Rymsha assist, but back-to-back goals by Parsons put the PrairieThunder ahead, 2-1, with 19:40 remaining in the second period.
Parsons' first goal, which was unassisted, came with 12:53 remaining in the first period. Nick Goyens and Marty Standish had assists on Parsons' second goal, which set the record.
Brett Holmberg sandwiched two goals around a Rymsha goal to give Bloomington its 4-2 lead heading into the third period. Holmberg's first goal came with 18:52 left in the second period off an assist by Jon Booras.
Holmberg's second goal was with 9:27 to go in the second period on assists by Shaun Fisher and Booras. Rymsha scored his goal with at the 17:05 mark of the second period. The assists went to Ryan Jorde and Kyle Deck on a power play.
Flint goalie Chad Alban stopped 40 of 44 shots to earn the win, while Scott Fankhouser faced 31 shots.
The loss dropped the PrairieThunder's record to 9-17 (18 points), while Flint improved to 10-18-1-2. The two teams meet again Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
