Icehawks Take Sole Possession Of First Place With Home Win

PORT HURON, MI - Jeff Zehr notched two goals in the third period on Saturday to boost the Port Huron Icehawks to a 4-2 victory over the Fort Wayne Komets at McMorran Arena.

The win, coupled with a Kalamazoo loss at Muskegon, gives the Icehawks (18-12-0-0) sole possession of first place in the International Hockey League standings with 36 points.

The Komets skated to an early lead with two goals in the first 11 minutes of play. Jay Holladay and Brandon Warner both scored to give Fort Wayne a 2-0 advantage that they would carry into the second period. The final two periods were dominated by the Icehawks, however, as they notched four consecutive goals to overtake the lead.

The Icehawks trimmed the deficit to 2-1 early in the second when Daniel Tetrault landed his sixth goal of the season just 26 seconds in. The goal was unassisted. The game then went scoreless until the opening of the third period when the Icehawks again scored just after the first puck dropped. The Icehawks began the stanza with a 5-on-3 man advantage and capitalized on it with a goal by Zehr at the nine second mark. Tetrault and Jamie Carroll assisted on the play.

Zehr struck again less than six minutes later and notched the game winner at 5:59. With the goals, he extended his goal streak to four games (5g) and his point streak to seven games (6g, 4a).

Nick Lindberg put the game away with a goal at 16:32. He was assisted by Carroll, who has now put up assists in his last five games.

The Icehawks penalty killing unit was stellar, killing off seven penalties to hold the Komets scoreless on the power play. The Icehawks were 1-6 with the man advantage in a physical game that saw the whistle blow for six fights and a total of 98 penalty minutes.

The Icehawks were outshot 35-31 in the win. Goalie Larry Sterling earned the win with 33 saves on 35 shots, while Nick Boucher turned away 27 of 31 shots.

The Icehawks are idle until Wednesday when they travel to Bloomington for a New Year's Eve faceoff. They then return home to kick off the 2009 portion of the schedule with back-to-back games. The host the same Komets on Friday and will receive a visit from the Flint Generals on Saturday.
